After forming in 2001, the band's incessant dedication to both the stage, the road, and the writing process earned them the attention of Orlando-based One Eleven Records. Signing with the label in 2002, the band immediately got to work on its freshman release "Start Over On Monday".
After condensing the introspective, yet pop sensible nature of their music into thirteen watertight tracks, "Always Leave the Ground" was born. After more than a year and a half on tour in support of their debut, and heading overseas to Japan, This Day & Age then released their highly anticipated follow up record, "The Bell & the Hammer."
As of October 24th, 2006, This Day & Age is on an indefinite leave of absence due to Jeff leaving the band. The remaining members are now a band called The Reign of Kindo.

Long Walk Home
This Day & Age Lyrics
Jump to: Overall Meaning ↴ Line by Line Meaning ↴
In a place I've never been
Where I don't know myself or anyone else
I can dream about the past
Or I can just let it go
I lost track of time five days ago
What is it about you
Is it all the love?
Or is it just the pain?
Don't leave me now
We've come to far
Just to set our eyes on a new star
I'll ride on clouds
'til you come down
Just promise me you'll always leave the ground
In the drivers seat
Is my self-esteem
Where I know that the heart should be
I'm cleaning off these shelves
To show you how I've changed
And if all goes well tonight
Will call for rain
I'm moving pass the past
At the slowest of speeds
Hoping that our loves
Exceeds our insecurities
Finding myself
Don't leave me now
We've come to far
Just to set our eyes on a new star
I'll ride on clouds
'til you come down
Just promise me you'll always leave the ground
I'm running in circles
It's you I'm thinking of
And if you don't want to talk
Then this isn't love
A new destination
I'll say my goodbyes
With my back turned to you
At least I know we tried
Don't leave me now
We've come to far
Just to set our eyes on a new star
I'll ride on clouds
'Til you come down
Just promise me you'll always leave the ground
The song Long Walk Home by This Day & Age is a reflection on the journey of self-discovery and how it often involves leaving behind the familiar and comfortable. It begins with the singer acknowledging that they are in a new place, both physically and mentally, and that they are struggling to recognize themselves and their surroundings. They are caught between nostalgia and the desire to move on, questioning whether it is the love or the pain that is keeping them rooted in this place.
The lyrics then shift to the idea of self-improvement, with the singer cleaning off shelves to show how they have changed. They are hopeful that their new-found growth can lead to a stronger, more secure and lasting love. The chorus serves as a plea to the loved one not to leave, to continue on this journey together, and to promise to always stay grounded.
The third verse sees the singer grappling with their feelings for their loved one and whether it is worth continuing with this relationship. The song ends with a bittersweet resignation, accepting that perhaps it's time to say goodbye and move on.
Overall, the song speaks to the universal struggle of finding oneself, growing and evolving, and the complexities of love and relationships. It acknowledges the fear and uncertainty that comes with change, but ultimately encourages taking a chance on growth and self-discovery.
