I assure you all the developers are aware of it. There no great difficulty in creating a realistic sandbox open world where Superman could fly aerodynamically how he does in cartoons and films. The main problem is in his powers and story. If it actually were to be an open world game the options for missions would be very limited due to the Superman’s invincibility and his weaknesses only being kryptonite and hostages.

This demo really is incredible. The flight, the city, the people below, the detailing, the jet streams... a visual stunner. Props to the guy that showed in this demo clearly how smart innovation and optimization can be done to make a product more pleasing. This literally makes me want to buy a console if they'd put out a great Superman game that could fly like this, have this virtually picture-perfect image and be this interactive with its surroundings. DC & WB really needs to step their game up, respect the legacy of the properties they own and take the time to make their films, products and franchises thrive as best as possible. These characters are legendary and they need to take time to find the right people to make these products a success.

I personally wish for a Flash game, as I believe there are many intricacies with the character and his abilities that would fit well for games, but he may be too powerful for his game, hence why they always put him with other characters. Best thing to do for a solo project is to have his origin story where he's not insanely overpowered yet but learns and grows

The biggest problem with Superman games is that he's literally invulnerable which makes challenges in gameplay boring in combat because he can't get hurt. I would love to see a game that pushes that boundry through solar energy stamina. Give us a game that really forces us to strategize around Supes' powers and not just with that standard kryptonite but also incorporate red starlight to drain him. I would also love to just have fun with his brute strength and be able to destroy the environment around me in a realistic manner.

I think it would be cool to implement a strength scaler that players could use to hold back his strength like he does in cannon so he doesn't destroy anything. That way you could make it easier or more difficult by scaling the strength so if you want to be weaker you can, or if you want to destroy everything then you can. It would also be cool to have a hard mode where the strength of moves depends on the depth you push the buttons so you have to be careful just like him.

The "CLARK KENT" levels we'll have you doing regular things, but also trying to uncover lex luthor's dirty dealings, acting a detective like in the Arkham games

"SUPERMAN" levels will have you on rescue missions, stopping robberies, and battling bad guys like Metallo, the Mxyzptlk, and lobo

The" KAL-EL" levels will have you dealing space matters, fighting with enemies like BRAINIAC, DARK SIDE, and discovering the history of Krypton and interacting around in the fortress of solitude

3 STORY

What makes Superman the great character is his humanity

He's not a dark and edgy person

He's not a paragon or a Gary Sue

He has lost many battles, hasn't been able to save countless people

But He often takes time off his day to help people in the smallest way he can

He's often have to cope and control his powers,

and being The last of his kind, he is often had no one to relate to

It's only his parents that made him the man he is because they love Clark for who he was

It's the small things that matter to him the most

People in this life that make it worthwhile

That's what the game should focus on most

The wisdom and responsibility he has for his self and for others of how we can be good people is what makes Superman great

I know it will likely never happen, but for it to really feel like a superman game (or any super hero game to be fair) I would expect him to be able to blow through buildings like its nothing, not just fly around them. Man, i feel like if someone just put everything into making an insanely detailed, living and breathing city in UE5 they could license it out to game devs and you could see a lot of different games set in the same city, with some tweaks and additions here and there.
I think that'd be pretty cool, especially if everyone who licensed it out added on to the city in some way and kept it growing over time.

Like for a cool mini addition I feel like you should hold the attack button longer as a way to like hold back on punches, tapping would just be using his full force obliterating the enemy and losing karma. The game would be reflective of how much superman impacts and I think the title "man of tomorrow" would reflect this theme.

I think for a superman game to work he would need to be able to take damage. The main story could be that someone like Lex Luther has put traces of kyrponite in to the water supply of metropolis or he has somehow gotten it into the atmosphere. This would allow superman to be a bit weakened, allowing him to take damage and would also mean he cant just 1 punch every single enemy. Just an idea.

I've been banging the drum for a flight sim to use this technology. Right now, the most photoreal flight sims use photogrammetry and satellite photos teamed with AI which analyses the tops of buildings and extrapolates the 3D shape of those buildings. The end result is very convincing from altitude, but get in among the buildings and the illusion falls apart horribly.

UE5 for some next-gen flight sim would be such a great thing. And as resource hungry as this demo is on PC, it still runs at a better framerate than something like MSFS does, ranging from about 58+ fps down at ground level in amongst the busiest areas of the city, to up to 100fps all the way up in the air using the camera feature in the Matrix demo. This is in contrast to around 30 to 70 or 80 in MSFS, at least these are the approximate numbers on my own system at 1080p.

This tech is such a leap forward.

Things that would be cool to have on a Superman game:
1. A pressure-sensitive flight button that controls how fast Superman is going (holding it down all the way can make you fly so fast you can't even see where you're going, while a light touch is just casual flying).
2. A combination of Franklin and Michael's special abilities from GTA V that slows down time for a short period, allowing you to fly around around and/or take out enemies easier and more carefully.

I think the issue with a superman game is the limitless nature of his power. You can fly through the city sure, but canonically he can fly at limitless speeds and I think once he entered the sun and could life 200 quintillion tons or something ridiculous.

That's difficult to translate into a game. Making limitless powers fun for a whole game is challenging. Or they limit the power to a city environment and essentially neuter the character.

The cool thing about this is that while it does show how specifically a Superman game could handle flying, it doesn't necessarily HAVE to be Superman. It could work just as well for any number of other existing heroes/villains that can fly such as Iron Man, or even an entirely new character. Superman in particular just happens to be interesting because we've never really gotten a good game starring him.

4:16 Passion tends to exceed experience/qualification, especially in art, and programming is pretty much an art. You can accomplish the same task with an entirely different workflow and end up with a completely different feeling product.

I'd imagine this is why there is such a disconnect in modern games being passionate pieces of art, Valve's games are a good example, all of it feels like it was made by passionate devs, the writing, the modelling and texturing of the geometry, the programming, the concepts.

A modder with a passion for superman can often outdo what a programmer that has no motivation other than that they have been contracted to create a superman game, because the passionate one goes the extra mile.

The best part of superman returns the game? The verticality of the sandbox and the different tiers of flying speed. The sonic boom was neat, even if it didnt feel fast. But the height you can reach flying was my favorite part. It may be barren with absolutely nothing to do, but the map barrier limits were huge. I loved how far out and how high you could get.
Never did story mode beyond the first 2 missions. Pretty much just would pop in the game to fly around and space out.
Grab daily planet globe, fly to the max height, throw it, and fly to catch it or race it to the ground. Or play as bizarro.
Was only enjoyment I got from it.
If they kept the huge sandbox with stratosphere height limit, did the speed right with responsive controls, and took my idea on how to have Clark gain powers throughout the game, and they'd have a great superman game.
I'd even throw in just one single side mission where you had to fly through hoops just for an evil laugh.

When I first saw this I thought it was a graphics mod for Superman Returns that came out on the original Xbox. The flying is pretty much identical and you have your heat-vision, super-breath and ice breath that you can play around with and you can punch and through bad guys around. If you want a good Superman game, it's Superman Returns. The only areas where it's lacking are graphics and destructable environments but it is a 15 year-old game to be fair.

@Divinity Mode PC will have faster I/O soon enough. Just waiting for NVIDIA RTX I/O, and Microsoft's DX12 Ultimate. PC had to wait for Windows to update to allow for raytracing as well, and look at PC raytracing now. Heads and tails above console.

Imagine what space would look like in this game. I'm sure you'd be able to fly to space to with Superman. I used to love Superman when I was a kid but I kind of grew out of them because I started seeing the flaws in the way the plot goes in the sense that he it's just gifted everything by the writer. What I mean by that is that the writer just give him a power out of nowhere you didn't have to learn it no explanation. He doesn't struggle that is actually one of the important things that helps a character in storytelling. I have heard people say his struggle is that he has no limits. I get that but at the same time when you have no connection to the reader not that great. However I have to say it I would definitely enjoy this game just because of how beautiful it looks. They have made me fall in love with this game if it was a real game it's a shame it's not. Also I don't hate Superman I'm just not crazy about it because of all that. I still enjoy watching the movies I just don't feel like Superman is my favorite because of those reasons. There are plenty of characters that are built like him that still have to struggle. I'm not saying Goku is stronger obviously he's not a what I am saying is Goku in Dragon Ball Z is built bike the Superman of that series yet he still faces people stronger than him. I just feel like it was lazy writing to say even with him as strong as he is that no one is stronger than him.

The physics should be such that Superman can damage and break anything he crashes into. He should also be able to smash thru walls, fire hydrants, trees, poles, etc. simply by casually walking into them.

EDIT: Perhaps the game could have Clark Kent investigating a story and questioning people ala LA Noir, then Superman could do all that All Star Superman tier craziness

The problem with every superman game is that he's invincible and so you can't really ever have a health bar. But what if Superman was so OP that you had to carefully control his power or else you'd accidentally punch a bad guy into the sun.

Difficulty isn’t the main problem as I see it. The main problem is you could create the largest map ever created for an open world game and STILL it wouldn’t be big enough to feel justified at all. This is a character that can travel to a different planet in seconds, so they’d have to buff his flying speed so intensely just so that you don’t cover the whole map in 1 second. There’s currently no way to develop a game for his powers. It would be watered down, depowered supes

If Superman has a health bar, it should be made of steel which means he could be invincible and resistant to bullets and all that. At least until he’s near Kryptonite and his health bar goes from invincible to normal, meaning that you’d have to stay away from anything harmful or you die.

When we do eventually get a Super-Man game, I would love for there to be a flight mechanic that allows the player to easily fly at the pace they want instead of a designated flight speed with a basic "sprint" and "stop" function. For example, it could work like a racing game, where the more you hold down the right trigger, the faster you go and vice versa. Or maybe it could work like the horse-riding in RDR2, where you press and hold a button to fly at a certain pace, but each time you press and hold, the faster you go. I just want to be able to fly straight up at the speed of sound and then decelerate until I enter a state of free-fall.

Also, the map would have to be unbelievably huge because of how fast Super-Man can fly. I feel like because of this, empty space on the map would be excusable unlike most games, since they could act as "Highways" essentially for the player to just go as fast as they want in a straight line, and because Superman is so fast, the player wouldn't get bored navigating it. You could have a series of large cities spread out along the map for most of the quests and story to take place. It would also make sense to have the game set in a relatively mountainous region. That way, the player has optional obstacles in the form of mountains and canyons to make gameplay more engaging.

i think a superman game with like. dynamic crime and real villains would be interesting. i think the main challenge of the game should be to live up to the values of superman.

the game should emphasize how easy it would be for superman to lay waste to the earth. and part of the fun would be to hold back, to treat villains exactly how rough they deserve to be treated and no more, even though you have limitless power.
