High and Low
This Is Deer Country Lyrics
Jump to: Overall Meaning ↴ Line by Line Meaning ↴
A lonely way of walking
You've got a lonely way of talking
You've got a lonely way
Of loving me
We were walking through
The bright sky
Your bright eyes
I was calling name to
The nighttime
You're breathing real softly
I saw your lips rise beside me
High and low
High and low
High and low
In the dream
We were walking
And the ghosts
Were calling
And the water
Was rising up to meet me
And the tide was rolling in
You asked me where I'd been
Said I don't know
But I'm back
By the way
Looked down to the water
And the voice was getting louder
And the lake rolls and took you away
So I walked and I called for you
Come home here like you used to
But you were gone, you had gone,
Gone away
You got a lonely way of walking
You got a lonely way of talking
You got this lonely way
Of loving me
The song High and Low by This Is Deer Country is a melancholic analysis of a relationship that is coming to an end. The singer observes his partner's loneliness in the way they walk, talk, and love him. As they stroll through the world together, he sees the emptiness in their eyes, noticing their reticence to truly open up and be vulnerable with him. The lyrics seem to suggest that their relationship may have been contingent upon a lack of true intimacy, with the partner remaining removed and distant even as they walk together under a bright sky.
The second verse takes place within a dream, where the singer and his partner are walking through a landscape that is becoming increasingly dangerous. Ghosts call out to the couple as the water rises around them, threatening to consume them whole. In this moment, the partner turns to the singer and asks where he has been, to which he can only respond with a vague "I don't know, but I'm back." As the voice of the ghosts grows louder and louder, the partner is suddenly taken away by the rolling tide. In the final verse, the singer mourns the loss of his partner, calling out for them and hoping in vain that they will return to him. Their love is imbued with a sense of isolation and loneliness, a dynamic that ultimately proved untenable.
Overall, High and Low is a haunting exploration of a love that has been built upon a shaky foundation. The singer's observations of his partner's loneliness, coupled with the dream sequence that seems to predict the end of their relationship, paint a picture of a couple for whom love was never enough. The song is musically sparse, with a simple guitar strumming pattern that allows the lyrics to take center stage. The slow, mournful melody underscores the sense of melancholy that pervades the entire track.

Of loving me
When it comes to loving me
We were walking through
We strolled together among
The bright sky
An illuminated atmosphere above
And I was falling through
I was descending into
Your bright eyes
The vivid color of your eyes
I was calling name to
I was shouting a name towards
The nighttime
The dark hours of the day
You're breathing real softly
You are inhaling and exhaling gently
I saw your lips rise beside me
I noticed your mouth curving upwards next to me

High and low

In the dream
In the fantasy
We were walking
We were moving on foot together
And the ghosts
And the apparitions
Were calling
Were shouting out
And the water
And the liquid
Was rising up to meet me
Was lifting towards me
And the tide was rolling in
And the oceanic currents were advancing
You asked me where I'd been
You inquired about my whereabouts
Said I don't know
I responded with uncertainty
But I'm back
But now I have returned
By the way
Incidentally
Looked down to the water
I gazed downwards into the liquid
And the voice was getting louder
And the sound became more intense
And the lake rolls and took you away
And the body of water overwhelmed and removed you
So I walked and I called for you
So I moved on foot while shouting for you
Come home here like you used to
Return to where you belong like before
But you were gone, you had gone
But you were absent, you departed
Gone away
Left to a different location
You got a lonely way of walking
You possess a solitary approach to moving on foot
You got a lonely way of talking
You possess a lonesome style of speaking
You got this lonely way
You possess a desolate manner
Of loving me
When it comes to loving me

@mississippirougarou
Driving at night in rural Mississippi feels more like there are several hundred deer per square mile.

Wanna hear something crazy? I live in Paterson NJ and I drive to work at like 4am and ive hit 2 deers in the city proper of Paterson, which is one of the most densely populated areas in America. My block is a typical urban block in New Jersey. Meaning we mostly all rent and the houses are right on top of each other with most homes being 2 or 3 family houses. I get on the highway to work 5 mins from my house and I see deer almost every day getting on the highway.

Great video I’ve been hunting in Oregon sense I was a little kid and I can say those numbers are about spot on
@masonleather
Thanks! I’ve heard Oregon is a very tough hunt, particularly the black tails on the western side of the state. I drove through there once and the terrain was beautiful but looked very thick.
@MrUNCLESAM84
You're absolutely right regarding the Midwest and especially Iowa, the south western Iowa is infested with white tail deer unlike the central and eastern parts of the state.
