Stables has been turning heads in all the right places since 2003: a first album Krülle Bol produced by John Parish , singles (Two Wooden Spoons) released by Rob da Bank’s label Sunday Best and a long-awaited second album on Dreamboat Records in 2010. Wriggle out the Restless was born out of a new, slower way of working. Gestated over a long period the album has drawn on This Is The Kit’s many musical friends (Rozi Plain [[label]Fence ], Jim Barr [of Portishead ] Francois [Fence] and The Liftmen [[label]Twisted Nerve]) to fill out their delicate music into a full, robust sound. “The aim was to have fun playing with people who’s work I really like” says Kate “the more you exchange and share with people the better things get and the more you learn.”
This Is The Kit perform regularly as a two-piece with Stables on vocals, guitar and banjo, and Vernon on violin, guitar, bass and percussion.

SOLID GREASE
This Is the Kit Lyrics
Jump to: Overall Meaning ↴ Line by Line Meaning ↴
We think we see, we don't see
Solid with grease
Covered in human oil, dead skin
Are we bold, are we free and bold
Can we be true only when I'm with you
Taking up so much space
Things get said, things get don't
Hold it in, let it go
People push you, will get shoved
Friends will shout at you when they're drunk
Doors get slammed, things get broke
Windows smashed, throwing stones
Things get said, things get don't
Hold it in
Hold it in
Hold it in
The lyrics to This Is the Kit’s song, “Solid Grease,” focus on the confusion and uncertainty of life. The opening lines, “they think they know, they don’t know; we think we see, we don’t see,” suggest that although people may have a sense of the truth, they can never fully grasp it. The song then moves onto the image of being “solid with grease” and “covered in human oil, dead skin,” which could symbolize the way in which humans are weighed down by the grime of life. This image is juxtaposed with the question of whether we are “bold” and “free” or whether we can only be “true” when with someone else. The song seems to suggest that we struggle to find our own identity and live authentically in the world.
The lyrics take a darker turn as they delve into the conflicts and challenges that people face in life. There are references to being pushed, shouted at, and the breaking of doors and windows. The repetition of “things get said, things get done” suggests that words and actions have consequences that cannot be undone. The chorus, “hold it in” is repeated three times, suggesting that it’s better to inwardly process our emotions rather than act out in ways that could harm ourselves or others.
Overall, the lyrics to “Solid Grease” convey a sense of the complexity of the human experience. It’s a reminder that we’re all just trying to make sense of the messiness of life while trying to remain true to ourselves.
