Thanks for the history lesson. I've been on a jazz journey this past month or so. Born and raised in New Orleans and my grandfather played sax. New Orleans has such a rich history and it really isn't represented in modern music.

Yes indeed! Zutty is a LEGEND! Played with Cab Calloway too if I'm not mistaken. The fact that he played with both Fats and Cab is emblematic of his versatility. Being from New Orleans, his roots are in the type of stuff we saw in this video, but he could also play in a big band setting. He later played with Bird, so that demonstrates that he could certainly hang with the bebop cats.

A musical genius who was never able to really do justice to his immense talents. Because of bad contracts, he was forced to record many, corny, silly songs, (for little money) but he was still able to transform them into something astonishing through his amazing talent.

I caught walking pneumonia about 4 times and while it’s not the most deadly type, I could barely even walk despite it being considered “mild.” You drown to death in your own mucus or get suffocated by your own lungs. Your entire airways get restricted and you just become a shell of a human. Can’t imagine what he was going through and how he did it, ‘specially without modern day meds.

Fats recorded this in 1929 (Victor 22108) as an instrumental and was re-released in 1943 (due to the need for songs because of the musicians strike) As far as I'm concerned, Fats was the best piano player of his time. So sad his life ended near the end of the year at age 39.

In 1926, Al Capone had his thugs kidnap Waller, & they took him to play piano at a multi-day Capone birthday party. Waller said he was payed really well, (got laid), treated nicely, & released, exhausted, but with a pocketful of cash, when the party finally ended. Heard recently that Waller got about 3 grand....about 30 grand in today's money. Not bad at all.

An old boy I knew got to play drums in Fatz Waller’s band. He’s dead now but was a customer of mine.
He was in the British Army (Gurkha’s) in WW2. Him and a mate were in a night club in Calcutta where Fatz and his band were entertaining the troops. His mate fancied the girl drummer and asked her to dance. When she said ‘I can’t because I’m playing the drums’ he said ‘Well my Mate can play the drums’
So everything worked out perfectly, His mate got to dance with the girl and he had the time of his life with the band.

Not only a superb musician, composer, arranger and showman, Waller was also a man of great dignity and humility. Perhaps the most famous example of the latter is the story about the time that Art Tatum walked into a club where Waller was performing. As Tatum made his way toward him, Waller stopped his playing, got up and stepped away from the piano bench announcing, "I only play the piano, but tonight God is in the house."

@Klienbottle Enthusiast I dont think they meant it to sound racist. Most of the stuff that came out during this era and earlier had very racist stuff and depicted Black people in a very unsavory manner. The OP was actually praising this footage for not doing what its predecessors did.

@Klienbottle Enthusiast Not to sound antagonistic, but how can you assume that from the comment? If you read it again, it's pretty clear that there was really no racist intention behind it-- just a commentator making an observation about the tainted African American history/image in American cinema/media. My guess is that you read the OP's comment with an unconscious assumption that the author was being sarcastic, therefore you interpreted it as "racist." But that's just my assumption, I have no clue how you actually read it. I just dont think that accusing someone of being a racist without any solid ground or evidence is right.

Chuck Berry and many other greats from the 50s rock Revolution specifically named Fats Waller among others from the music generation before, as one of their influences.
He clearly was a standout from his era and an influence probably bigger then many of us today may be aware.

Thankfully the technology of video from that era exist so we can all enjoy what artists like him were all about.

This is priceless... including the rest of the band and even Ole' Dude gettin' at 1:55 !! Awesome
