In the early years of his career he made music that, in his own words, "exploded in your face": a particularly powerful brand of synth pop with full-force vocals, notably on his earliest EPs (Hylas 001 and Hylas 002) as well as the 2015 Hylas album, the culmination of his Berlin years.
Azier gained further prominence as a co-writer and producer on Stromae's Racine Carrée album (2013).
Having moved to Paris, the albums Rouge (2017) and Stray (2018) marked a distinct shift in style, with Azier moving towards a more elegant and melodic brand of electronic pop.
Azier's fourth full-length album, Love, Disorderly, came out in 2020. In between albums, Azier continues to release EPs, such as Raven on the First Floor (2019), and singles, including the remarkable A Collection of Broken Ideas (2021), a 43-minute long suite divided into two album sides of well over 20 minutes each.

Where my blood runs thinner
Searching for purpose
Trying to be winners
Ooh, ooh
Trying to be winners
Chasing only shimmer
Are we pretenders
Trying to be winners
Oh, oh
Trying to be winners
Oh, ooh
Trying to be winners
Oh calm me down, calm me down
Cut me loose
I've got nothing to prove
I've got nothing to prove
Oh calm me down, calm me down, calm me down
Cut me loose
I've got nothing to prove
I've got nothing to prove
Oh, oh
Trying to be winners
Oh, ooh
Trying to be winners
Oh, ooh
Trying to be winners
The song "Winners" by Thomas Azier is a commentary on the pressure to succeed in modern society. The lyrics suggest that success is often defined by external factors such as wealth, fame, and status, and that many people are driven to achieve these goals at any cost. The repetition of the phrase "trying to be winners" emphasizes the idea that winning is a constant struggle, and that for many people, it is a never-ending pursuit.
The phrase "under the surface/where my blood runs thinner" suggests a sense of vulnerability or fragility. This vulnerability is contrasted with the image of "people around us/chasing only shimmer," which implies a focus on superficial or materialistic goals. The phrase "are we pretenders" implies a sense of self-doubt or questioning about whether the pursuit of success is genuine or merely for show.
The lyrics also suggest a desire for release from the pressure to succeed. The repeated plea to "calm me down, calm me down/cut me loose" suggests a desire to escape from the constant pursuit of success and to find a sense of peace or freedom.
Overall, Thomas Azier's "Winners" is a thought-provoking commentary on the pressures of modern life and the quest for success.

2017 was my graduation year from high school - this was my favorite off Rouge that year.
This sounds so different compared to his other work, with almost more heart and soul in this song than any other. This will always be one of my favorite songs in general. Thank you Thomas!
