Je quitte mon père
La ville attend
Les petits rats des champs.
Une jolie fermière
Me dit : "Où vas-tu ?"
On n'me donne rien
Mais comment me nourrir
The song "Le Bal des oiseaux" by Thomas Fersen tells the story of a young man leaving his father's house and heading to the city with a pretty farmer he meets. She invites him to ride with her on her cart and they make their way to the city. While in the city, the young man struggles to find food and shelter and eventually finds himself playing piano in a bar. Despite these challenges, he dreams of a better life and finding love. Throughout the song, the refrain of "Nous irons danser au bal des oiseaux près de la rivière" (We will go dance at the bird ball by the river) emphasizes the longing for a carefree, happy life away from the struggles of the city.
The lyrics illustrate the dichotomy between city and nature: the young man starts his journey in the countryside and feels free and at ease among the birds and fields, while the city is presented as harsh and unforgiving, where he struggles to find basic needs such as food and shelter. However, the refrain of dancing at the bird ball by the river suggests that the singer finds hope and joy in the idea of escaping to a place where nature and music have the power to make things right again.
Overall, the song is a romantic and dreamy tribute to the beauty of life's simple pleasures, contrasted with the harsh realities of urban life. It encourages the listener to find hope and solace in music and nature, and to keep pursuing their dreams despite the obstacles they may face.
