Moi qui me croyais un saint

Il m'est apparu
Que j'ai un côté malsain
Donnant sur la rue.
Sous mes lunettes en écaille,
Je louche un p'tit peu
Du côté de la canaille
Timide et honteux.
Je quitte l'emploi,
Mes pas dans ceux des vauriens,
En marge des lois.
Moi qui me croyais un saint
Il m'est apparu
Que j'ai un côté malsain
Donnant sur la rue.
Et je troque l'auréole
Pour une casquette
Et les fumées de l'alcool
Dans une guinguette.
J'vais fêter mes fiançailles
Avec le milieu,
Loin des beaux quartiers d'Versailles,
Dans les mauvais lieux.
Je vais jouer au jardin,
Oui, mais quelquefois
Je mets de l'eau dans mon vin,
Je tourne et je bois.
J'troque mes lunettes en écaille,
Mes lunettes de bleu,
Je deviens Jésus-la-Caille,
Baron du milieu.
Et les filles du collège,
Hautaines autrefois,
Désormais me font cortège
Et jouent avec moi.
Moi qui me croyais un saint
Il m'est apparu
Que j'ai un côté malsain
Donnant sur la rue.
Sous mes lunettes en écailles,
Je louche un p'tit peu
Du côté de la canaille
Timide et honteux.
Mais pour sortir du bottin,
C'est moins dangereux
D'être doucement cabotin,
De rêver un peu
The lyrics to the song Moi qui me croyais un saint ("I who thought I was a saint") by Thomas Fersen explore the concept of duality within oneself. The song describes a person who always thought of themselves as a saintly figure, but then realizes they have a "sick" side to them that is drawn to the "wrong" side of town. The singer wears "tortoise shell glasses" and has a tendency to "squint a little towards the scoundrels" with a sense of shame and shyness.
The lyrics then describe the singer's transformation from their previous saintly persona to a more debaucherous one. They trade in their halo for a cap and begin to indulge in drinking and hanging out in lower-end establishments. The singer also exchanges their glasses for a pair of blue ones and transforms into a "baron of the middle" named Jésus-la-Caille. The singer then finds newfound attention from the girls who once ignored them from their previously elevated social status.
Overall, the lyrics to Moi qui me croyais un saint reflect on the concept of the human psyche's duality and how someone can have both saintly and "sick" tendencies within them. The song seems to suggest that embracing both sides of oneself can lead to a more fulfilled life.
