Godoj was born on March 6, 1978 in Rybnik, Poland to Danuta and Eugen Godoj. In 1981, he and his parents along with his sister Hannah moved to Recklinghausen. Thomas then attended a secondary school and passed his speciality graduation examination for a career as a technical draftsman. He attended the Bochum University of Applied Sciences, specializing in civil engineering. During his studies, he became interested in music and played with local bands such as Cure of Souls, Fluxkompensator, Tonk! and WINK.
In the summer of 2007, Godoj auditioned in Berlin for the fifth season of Deutschland sucht den Superstar. The judges enjoyed his rock style and attitude and each one voted him on to the next round, and later to the top 15. In the first live show, Thomas performed Chasing Cars by Snow Patrol and received over a minutes standing ovation from the audience while the jury gave him overwhelming praise. Week after week, Thomas performed for Germany until he reached the Top 2. Godoj won the final contest with 62,2%.
Although Thomas was a front-runner from the start of the competition, he landed in the bottom groups twice during live result shows. But after the voting results were published, it was shown that Thomas received the highest percentage of votes every week. This places him in DSDS history, along with Mark Medlock, as a contestant with the highest number of votes each week.
The Morning Sun

All these cracks remind me
Of someplace I've been
Here in the morning sun
Look in my eye
I'm still far
From being flawless
Every morning sun
Everything's coming back
To where it
Once began
Someday
We'll spread our ashes
In the streets
Just to rise again
Didn't we have it all
Didn't we almost have it all
Didn't we have it all
Didn't we almost have it all
As we strike the colors
Dawn goes down to day
Didn't we have it all
Didn't we almost have it all
Look at my face
Took some time
For all these lines
To find their place
Here in the morning sun
Dig in my head
Some of the pages
Are still unread
But I know
Dice can be rolled again
After all we've been through
Old and new
Didn't we have it all
Didn't we have it all
Didn't we almost have it all
Didn't we have it all
Didn't we almost have it all
As we strike the colors
Dawn goes down to day
Didn't we have it all
Didn't we almost have it all
Like any has got an out
Lows other side is high
And every love we care about
At some point makes us cry
We fight a war and kiss a star
It's all part of who we are
Didn't we have it all
Didn't we almost have it all
Didn't we have it all
Didn't we almost have it all
As we strike the colors
Dawn goes down to day
Didn't we have it all
Didn't we almost have it all
Look at my shoes
Though they're stained
They always know
Wich way to choose
Into the morning sun
The lyrics to Thomas Godoj's "The Morning Sun" reflect the idea of resilience and the ability to rise up from adversity. The opening lines "Look at my skin, all these cracks remind me of someplace I've been" suggest that the singer has experienced hardship and has the scars to show for it. Despite this, the singer looks towards the morning sun as a symbol of hope and renewal. The repetition of "Didn't we have it all, didn't we almost have it all" highlights the sense of loss and the idea that success and happiness can be fleeting. The imagery of spreading ashes in the streets is a powerful reminder of the cyclical nature of life and the inevitability of death.
The second verse focuses on the singer's face and head, and the idea that their experiences have left their mark. The line "But I know dice can be rolled again" suggests that the singer is still hopeful for the future and recognizes that life is full of second chances. The bridge provides a more optimistic outlook, stating that even though we may experience lows and heartbreak, it's all part of the human experience and makes us who we are. The final verse brings it all together as the singer looks down at their stained shoes, but acknowledges that they always know which way to go, into the morning sun.
Overall, "The Morning Sun" is a song about resilience, the power of hope, and the recognition that life is full of losses and gains. The cyclical nature of the lyrics reinforces the idea that every end is a new beginning.
