The First Noel
Thomas J. Larsson Lyrics

Jump to: Overall Meaning ↴  Line by Line Meaning ↴

The first Noel the angel did say
Was to certain poor shepherds in fields as they lay,
In fields where they lay tending their sheep,
On a cold winter's night that was so deep.

[Chorus]
Noel, Noel, Noel, Noel,
Born is the King of Israel.

They looked up and saw a star
Shining in the east, beyond them far,
And to the earth it gave great light,
And so it continued both day and night.

[Chorus]

And by the light of that same star
Three Wise Men came from country far,
To seek for a King was their intent,
And to follow the star wherever it went.

[Chorus]

This star drew nigh to the northwest,
Over Bethlehem it took its rest,
And there it did both stop and stay,
Right over the place where Jesus lay.

[Chorus]

Then did they know assuredly
Within that house the King did lie,
One entered it them for to see,
And found the Babe in poverty.

[Chorus]

Then entered in those Wise Men three,
Full reverently upon the knee,
And offered there, in His presence,
Their gold and myrrh and frankincense.

[Chorus]

Between an ox stall and an ass,
This Child truly there He was,
For want of clothing they did Him lay
All in a manger, among the hay.

[Chorus]

Then let us all with one accord
Sing praises to our heavenly Lord,
That hath made Heaven and earth of naught,
And with His blood mankind hath bought.

[Chorus]

If we in our time shall do well,
We shall be free from death and hell,
For God hath prepared for us all
A resting place in general.

[Chorus]

Overall Meaning

The song 'The First Noel' is a traditional English Christmas Carol that narrates the story of the Nativity, describing the arrival of Jesus Christ. The first verse begins with the proclamation of the angel, telling the news of Jesus' birth to some shepherds, who were in the fields tending to their sheep. The second verse talks about the appearance of a bright star in the sky, which the shepherds see and follow to find the place where Jesus lay.

The third verse refers to the three wise men or Magi who also saw the star, and understood it as a sign of the birth of the savior of the world. Following the light of the star, the wise men came to see the baby, and they gave Him gifts of gold, frankincense and myrrh. The fourth and fifth verses describe the setting - the location of Jesus' birth, which is a stable, between an ox stall and an ass. The sixth and final verse encourages listeners to join in singing praises to God for His love for mankind - by sending His only begotten son in human form to save them. The lyrics state that if they live their lives doing good, they will earn a place in heaven, where they can rest in peace.

Based on MY Dad!!!!.....45 years ago he and my Mum had very little money for Christmas presents one year, so he bought his three sons second-hand bikes, stayed up all through the night after hand-painting all three bikes the same colour and even put some paper snowflakes around them in the morning and held us back from going into the lounge in case Father Christmas was still there.... and screams of three boys rang out rang out as we found them!!!...a room filled with a rare commodity..."EXCITEMENT!!"

The following year i went to his works Christmas Party for parents and children and as i went up to sit with Father Christmas to be given a present, i looked in Father Christmas's eyes and suddenly realised at that moment that Father Christmas was MY Dad...he leaned across and said some words i never forgot..."I KNOW YOU KNOW IT'S ME SON...but don't tell anyone ok. They probably would think you are crazy".

He's 84 now and after this BBC Advert touched me deeply i gave him an extra hug this Christmas and said "Merry Christmas Father Christmas..a promise is a promise...i never told a soul".

He smiled at me, hugged me, looking at me with those same eyes like 45 years was yesterday and said.."Good lad" and winked at me.

FATHERS should all be this way with their children.

Will always love you Dad.
