I unironically like Thomas Kincaid’s work.

It is talented. It is comforting. Comfort is a legitimate emotion.
For people like me who spend every day of my life thinking about the “challenging”, these paintings challenge me to relax a bit.

Enjoying the breeze in your hair on a cool day and the beauty of a cool spring day is no trite thing. It is the one thing no monument has ever been built to, and is maybe the thing realistically most deserving of a monument being built to it. It’s human.

Human is messy, but it is not only messy.

These haters are snobs, and frankly, most of their challenging art is actually ugly and less worthy of a wall than Obama burning the constitution.

Classical artists call modern art trash because it is ugly. Modern artist call this guy’s art trash because it is too beautiful.

How about Bob Ross? His paintings are pretty formulaic. I liked his show ~ very soothing
His work is not something that I would immediately recognize because so much of it looks the same. Here in Michigan the target market would be top of the state in the UP.

How about Wyland and Lassen? Are the wales better than a school of bright fish?
God can and Does grant gifts and talents ~ just because you don’t like it doesn’t mean everyone else has to.

If I had to look at a painting on my wall everyday for the rest of my life, I can guarantee that it would not be a Jackson Pollock OR an Andy Warhol.
The only interesting thing about the way Warhol worked was by setting up a studio for other artists mostly young adults to come and learn.
However I happen to think that he didn’t really care about the art at all. He just wanted the young people around him.
One man’s trash is another man’s treasure.
The thing I dislike the most about the whole is the artificial Art Snobbery that infests the art world. Not everything appeals to everyone.

I hate how people give Norman Rockwell a lot of shit for "being too positive and kitschy" but he was a good artist, and he wanted to cultivate a positive atmosphere, especially after the World Wars. Not everything has to be negative and real, art is supposed to be an escape from reality, sometimes I don't want reality in my art.

People also like to forget, that as an illustrator you are very limited in what kind of art you can produce, because client work is often times very restrictive. It is also often not considered, that most of what Rockwell painted were commissioned images for magazine covers or adverts, where he couldn’t really express his own opinions too overtly. That doesn’t make him any less of a great artist though, the problem is - and here I am speaking as an illustrator myself - the art world & gallery culture is rather elitist and considers most commercial art as "below" them and intellectually unchallenging, even though they are more often than not incredibly interesting and innovative in style

Art isn't "supposed" to be anything. It's usually made to be useful in some way, but not always. People don't hate Kinkade's work because it tried to comfort people, they hate it because it was boring and one-note and in spite of not being overly good at what it was trying to do was commercialized out the ass so that it gave him a shitload of money and visibility. There are thousands of nameless, young, hungry artists who aren't shitbirds trying to do the same thing, and their work is fine, but because Kinkade is a name you're probably going to buy his over theirs

Rockwell was one of the most skillful painters of all time. His critics jeer at him because they are jealous of his extraordinary ability. Very early in his career Rockwell made a conscious choice to be a commercial illustrator. As such he was obliged to satisfy the dictates of his editors, who were themselves obeying the demands of the market; they were selling a product, and it had to be full of mawkish sentimental images. Rockwell at least honestly acknowledged this reality, kincaid was so full of bullshit it squirted out his ears.

I don't fault people who don't like modern or abstract art; it's difficult to grasp or 'warm up to' at times. But I find Kinkade's work just as unapproachable, if not more, because he's not even really trying to say anything. It's not any more artistic than a "Happy Birthday" balloon.

@The Hylian Loach For centuries, the art world has had a bad habit of blanketly labeling anything outside of it as "not real art." If it's popular, different, not understood by them, or has the "wrong" messaging, the art world tends to just write it off without second thought, which distracts from what art is (or it looks at art in a far too narrow, limited way): the world as the artist sees it or wants to see it. It's what made Van Gogh great but hated and Kinkade mediocre and hated; point is they both had it. Kinkade's paintings were how he saw the world or wanted to see it, and I think there's merit to that that the art world constantly misses when they write of populist art by default. That's what hasn't changed: the writing off of things they don't understand. Everyone does it; we all tend to write-off movies we don't get.

@detroit funk often that overuse is pretty deliberate. Some artists want it bright and colorful, others want earthly tones, and they may intentionally limit the number of colors to pretty few. Its still okay to not like it. I dont have any really strong opinions on color palettes, but its not a "flaw" it is a style

Personally I’d argue that there’s nothing wrong with his art in and of itself, it just isn’t served well by presentation as a framed piece on the wall. You wouldn’t use a background from a ghibli film as wall art, but it’s breathtaking in context. His pieces are simply in the wrong context and are better served as illustrations or backgrounds

My mom loved Kinkade's paintings. The way the light coming out from the homes stood out to me the most. It's like the artist was trying to tell the world that a simple home should be warm, bright and inviting. When I was a child, my mother had a book with pages filled with his work. I loved to sit for hours flipping through the pages, lost in the details of his pretty, cozy worlds. His paintings influenced my taste in art, and now that I'm older, his art is nostalgic for me.

Concentrate on the later and you'll feel better about yourself. But even the people that hate it give you something, they give you the knowledge that you stirred a reaction. i think that one of the reasons that his work is so loved or hated, is the generic ephemeral nature. his art work is dementia brought to life. that disjointed, misinformed, impossible nostalgia. unlike rockwell, you could never have come across his work in real life. if i had, id suspect i was dosed. yet you are expected to believe you can. its the nature of the man that is hateful. he would have been welcomed by hitler, and thats not to say he would have supported hitler. but the attitude and beliefs of the third reich on art where identical to his attitudes. i do not believe that the art world has recovered from its grief over the destruction the nazis brought. forever on edge against romanticism of art and life. it is often prven by the attitudes of the artists themselves. those bemoaning modern art gain the notice, while those who love all beauty in art, as well as horror, are left forgotten by both.

The fact that people can HATE this type of art shows the deep problem with the art in XX cent. All that "not deep enough", "not chalanging enough" - is just a modernist bullsht that somehow considered the ultimate truth. Bob Ross really didn't hate anyone or anything; the guy was just pure love. To think of a guy making money from painting? OK, I'm not Bob Ross, and I shouldn't presume to know what he would think. But he loved painting & encouraged it. I really think he would be happy that someone could make a living from painting, even if they were a cutthroat. I could even see Bob Ross praising Kinkade's paintings—I'm not saying whether he would, just that I could see it.

here in Germany "kitsch" is a fairly used word, most of people that use that word are like 20-40. It's generally said in a "classic romantic emberassing" way, if that makes sense. You say something is "kitschig" when for example you watch a romance show that's over the top romantic, with like 90% of the characters dialouge is "oh I missed you so much I love you" and that stuff. I dont know much about how it's used in other languages, but since it's originally a German word I just wanted to share this :)

My grandparents bought a copy of the “Garden of Prayer” Painting with details done by kincade himself. It is in the home office and is just a nice painting to look at when having a mental breakdown. Though the man highly conceded and very greedy,honestly it’s a pleasant painting

There's art that's not at all challenging, and then there's art that's so "challenging" that the reality is that one has to fabricate any and all meaning from scratch while the artist has essentially done nothing. Sure, Kinkade's paintings may not be very original, or challenging, but I can appreciate them just for being technically impressive, and yes, there is value in just looking pretty. I won't look at a Kinkade painting for long, and I probably won't remember it, but I think it's better than the specific genre of modern art where some rich asshole gets heaps of money and praise off of being the 87th person to straight up display a blank white canvas (yes, this has happened several times) as if that's still subversive and not just another fad. And when you dare to criticize it people say "Oh but you reacted to it so it succeeded" like literally just being annoying is some kind of accomplishment and not the easiest shit in the world. Those kinds of artists deserve as much credit as internet trolls who don't even make attempts at humor, but just spam slurs everywhere. Of course I don't think that the one sole purpose of art is to be comfortable and inoffensive; in fact I think you can get a lot more out of something that's willing to push the audience a little or even a lot. That's why some trolls have been legitimately funny, like the "sharks are smooth" guy. But I appreciate pieces like that so much more when they ADD something of value rather than purely being "original" on the basis of what they DON'T have - mass appeal, prettiness, clear subject matter, etc. - and when they actually have some technique to back them up. This is just my opinion, but subversion happens in what you contribute, not just what you take away.

I'm a fan of Beksinski and Dali, I quite like surreal art especially the creepy, unnerving kind that evokes nightmare-like imagery. I also love Kincaid's works, which might seem a bit contradictory but his technique is good and his "high-dynamic realism" (the best way I could describe it) style is very immersive while still conveying a dream-like quality (maybe I just love all things dreamy, lol). Some consider them to have excessive complexity but I think it's just right. You can really imagine yourself in these scenes, walking along babbling brooks surrounded by lush vegetation as you get closer and closer to home, the warm light inviting you in to find peace.

I take no issue with art that exists to make you feel; frankly that's the kind I like the most. Whether I'm experiencing hellish visions of terror as the souls of the damned clamor through the pits of the underworld, deep unease as a mile-tall elephant with seven-jointed legs towers over the horizon, or the joyous beauty of a pastoral country valley beckoning me in a way that is both refreshing and intimately familiar, art to me is at its best when it's making me feel. The evocation of profound emotions from simply looking at paint on canvas is what I consider the pinnacle of artistic expression and accomplishment.

Of course not everyone will get this experience from Kincaid's work, and that's perfectly fine. But people who go out of their way to disparage his work seem to universally have ulterior motives totally disjointed from the merits of the art itself.

I honestly just find this whole thing to be very sad. It's as you said towards the end, it seems like he has always been a very troubled person, and with how he struggled with addiction etc, I'm betting he didn't have much self confidence. These paintings were most likely his escape, a world without anything bad, that comforted him and other people, a world where he didn't need addiction. A safe space for him, maybe even a mask because when initially looked at, you would think that a very kind person painted them. I don't think marketing this feeling was a bad thing, in fact it was probably his only source of self confidence, and he capitalized on the feeling of being wanted, of his art being wanted, and thus got dragged into that toxic spiral of attaching his worth to only one thing, and took to lashing out when that was threatened. I'm not trying to say he was a good person or anything, just that it's kinda heartbreaking to see his paintings vs his own life, and how much he held himself back from happiness.

McNaughton kind of reminds me of some French painters I heard about during my Art History class that literally just painted what they thought of what was going on during their revolution, and then got surprised when their work got famous. I wish there were more painters like that, who just painted their mind, regardless of how polarizing it may be, with the goal of just putting their mind on canvas instead of trying to get rich, or famous, or to send a pointed message. I think that's really what art is, the artistic expression of man's thoughts and emotions expressed in visual form, and it's a pity artists so often forget that.

It's the lack of contrast. Kinkade seems to refuse to allow any of his hard work not to be shown, so there are never shadows dark enough to obscure anything in his paintings, thus they lack an appropriate sense of depth.

As someone who attended college for art, my classmates and teachers almost always hate things that the average person thinks is nice or wholesome. I don't get it, it seems pretentious to hate a man's art just cause it has a charm and coziness to it. I like just liking something without having to demand it be nihilistic.

I think a lot of artsy people try to find meaning and expression in art and that’s how they justify it being such a big deal to them. There’s not much more meaning to kinkade’s art other than “it’s cute and is meant to look nice on a living room wall” and because it’s so prolific it’s become representative of art that serves as a practical boring wall filler. So its existence is basically an insult to those who think very highly of art, and they clearly take it personally lol

I like his fantasy/dream like art lighting, but I also recognize that I was around his art prints a lot when grieving. It is a "safe" imaging and yes, perhaps greeting card like; but it can bring a sense of safety and calmness. Over the years I've ended up casually collecting Kinkade's puzzles. They're not only some of the best made puzzles (you can pretty much pick them up without them falling apart) but I prefer the artwork as well in terms of my process for putting together puzzles. I had no idea people hated his art so much, I've always looked at his art and wished I had that kind of skill since I find it difficult to translate what's in my mind into art. I'm studying arts & humanities and A&H is supposed to be about observing and describing, without judging whether we think something is right or wrong. It just IS. People seem to want art to be something very specific nowadays, forgetting art is simply a person taking some supplies and translating what is in their imagination (or being seen physically and being filtered through their brain) into something others can observe. Kind of like how people use language to describe things only they are experiencing (thoughts, feelings, and sensations). Art is merely a testament to the artist's psyche and personality, and nothing else.

Kinkade's art is repetitive, in fact I own three puzzles of his that are different paintings of lighthouses on cliffs with the sun setting (or rising). In my own opinion, it seems the repeating motifs in his art (if the comment below mentioning his difficult childhood is correct) coupled with his addiction and devout Christian beliefs could indicate his art is a product of unresolved trauma, which causes people to play out the same patterns over and over as the brain attempts to process the old memories. His overly optimistic and simplistic settings could indicate unconscious attempts at escaping negative emotions of the past or patterns of interpersonal dysfunction that he couldn't resolve, so he escaped through art and substance abuse. Personally, the juxtaposition between his problematic personal life and kitsch artwork makes it more interesting as a topic of study; more interesting, I feel, because he seemed unaware of himself and so it is more authentic to Kinkade than an artist who is intentionally trying to portray themselves in a certain light through their art (like trying to seem deep or intellectual, etc.) because they have enough self-awareness to modify their behaviour--which means it no longer has genuine authenticity. Kinkade's art is also a part of history, like it or not--it just is what it is. It's too bad people dismiss him on a superficial level instead of pursuing his life and legacy from an academic perspective. His art is representative of his own personal history, but also the time, place, and culture in which his art gained widespread popularity.

Edit: I replace the reply to extend it and talk more about it.
I see them as “background Disney 2D animated movies” which isn’t bad but it means for me that in the first seconds (even minutes) it looks very pretty, you feel happiness with a bit of sadness because you know you will stop liking it as much as you did five seconds ago, then that joy ends and you just have the vague memory of those feelings. They look very optimistic, I wouldn’t say too much because i don’t get what is something too optimistic (I get it means to “everything is rainbows and unicorns” but for me that is something else which is innocence in a child, but that’s a different thing). It’s like a candy, you like the taste it gives when it’s in your mouth, once it’s gone you can’t simply recreate that taste that easily, when you see another candy you want to buy it but too much candy isn’t very healthy. The taste is complex yet very simple to notice, there are a lot of them but you don’t want to not eat them, at least one per day. And of course there always are old and tasteless candy that you don’t want to see them again. I should call it “candy art” or something like that but I like the first nickname a gave.
However I’m not going to say anything about the artist because I really don’t care about him.

Bob Ross has very similar to Kinkade’s. In fact, I’d say that some of Kinkade’s paintings are of higher detail than Ross’. However, there is something so much more genuine in Bob’s paintings. They are simple. But that’s why we love them! The simplistic techniques used to make well composed and beautiful art. That, and the fact that Ross was such a lovely person. He enjoyed doing art and wanted to teach it to the world. Kinkade wanted to sell art.

both Ross and Kinkade have different skill levels, i also strongly agree with the OP on this matter, a lot of Ross' works are of course beautiful but sometimes they can feel lacking or empty, where as apposed to Kinkade's works which feel a lot more lively/cosy. just because i am more biased towards Bob Ross' works because i like him as a person and grew up watching him doesnt mean i cant see the flaws in some of his artworks. Kinkade's art, while very skilled, is not my personal cup of tea, but i can see why people like it, its just the sad reality that he had politized his own works to the point of no return

Bob Ross's art is simplistic, but genuine. It doesn't feel contrived to manipulate the viewer, but instead expresses the emotions of the artist with sincerity. He was also willing to sacrifice space on the canvas to dark shadows in order to make the lit portions more vibrant and vivid. Contrast really is vital to certain genres of art, such as landscapes. Without contrast, you lose the sense of depth.

Thing is, his work was beloved. One thing DA and your grandma's house have in common is that neither are affiliated with the avant-garde art scene. I'm all for popular art, but you need to keep enough separation between your head and your ass to know that your extreme skill at drawing cozy cottages or anime OCs isn't going to count for much in the MoMA.

I bought a bunch of his Disney prints for my wife as a wedding gift and we hung them up in our daughters room once she came along. We love them, even though the guy was a hot mess. Walter Benjamin's definition of Kitsch definitely fits Kinkade: there sure is light, partorial idyllic spectacles presented, that's too easy to understand and get immersed within it, but almost impossible to matain a critical distance. People hate it because some of his arts just yelling at you: come into my brace! enjoy me! there's definitely no need to criticize and think at all, just enjoy the atmosphere! This is the pure spiritual essence of modern commodity. It's like porn and drugs, but offering a warm and religious experience. Karl Marx once said that religion is the opium of people. Kinkade's art surely serve the same purpose. People from devastating life might need this feelings, but long time immersion and open praisal in commodity art is somewhat harmful for developement of aesthetic taste and ideological critiques.

Part of it, I think, is the Ivory Tower mentality. You see it in a lot of intellectual spaces, not just art. It's the idea that you are better educated and not directly involved, therefore you are able to see the big picture and "know better." Kinkaid found the lowest common denominator on the optimism side, added a truly weird light trick (the paintings look subtly different in different light; in high light, it looks like a sunrise, in low light, it looks like a sunset), and it worked.

it's honestly very interesting to me that someone who had such a dark death made such cheery art, whereas someone like francis bacon who also struggled with alcoholism and terrible trauma in his life and made such notoriously dark and raw art lived much longer and died of natural causes. the comparison makes me wonder, had he confronted his issues and himself through his art the way bacon did would he have been able to work through it and improve? knowing the dark side to him in his personal life brings an uneasy feeling to his pieces, not only adding to the artificial atmosphere but also giving the feeling that something sinister is lurking beneath the facade the same way it was with the man himself.

BDS. Nice hit piece. I love Thomas Kinkade's artwork, especially its sentimentality, especially its illumination. This is despite the man's flaws. He's not the only problematic artist or human being who ever lived. It shows how deranged many people have become over the past couple of decades. The galleries were nice to walk around too. 12:23 is my favorite of them all.

Did you watch the whole video? The problem was that Kinkade claimed that his work was more than what they were and kept being hostile and condescending towards the art world throughout his career. Had he had some humility and just accepted that his art was anything but groundbreaking, I don’t think anybody would have celebrated his death

The Tangled recreations are spectacular but it’s still missing Cassandra, Varian, Lance Strongbow, Kiera, and Catalina. Frozen still gives chills. Flynn Rider’s nose is thankfully drawn right. I am still waiting on one of Kinkade’s imitations to make something with Grand Ruler Sassacus of the Pequot.

My mom used to have a few of these pictures in our wall like more than 30 years ago. I like his paintings, I live in a rural area, and those paintings remind me of here.

"well, greeting cards need illustrations" about sums up how I felt about this the whole time.. Like, I don't think grandmas should be obligated to decorate their rooms with "deep" artworks? (and I use quotes since so many people just use the word for dark themes, even those easily as - if not more - generic than positive ones)

I love these painting particularly the ones with lots of nature and a cottage or two. They make me feel calm and I would love to live in a cottage like one in the paintings.

I see these as akin to sentimental greeting card art - meant to evoke a narrow set of emotions for a short time, similar to imagery in ads; like a piece of candy for your feelings instead of your tummy. Some people love candy all day long but not everyone can handle it.

I had old neighbors who had a tidy simple home and who were very proud of their Kinkade piece in the living room.

I’m an artist, I haven’t had classical training; what I do is experiment. Sometimes I surprise myself. I like his art because at 48 years old, I have had to move about every 3 years or 16 times. His paintings are soothing and peaceful. Warm and inviting ~ how home is supposed to feel.

My favorite is Van Gogh. He only sold one painting in his life. I can say I have sold more than him while alive! 😎😂
An artist isn’t worth anything until they are dead. Aside from any shady stuff he may or may not have done; Kinkade had the rare gift of creating and selling. Most people cannot do both.
As far as modern art goes, I am shocked by the filth that passes as art these days. It’s grotesque and disturbing ~ disgusting. Millions of dollars for paint slung onto a canvas.
Believe it or not, it Does require skill to paint the way Kinkade
It takes a lot more skill and talent to paint the way he did than it does to slap some paint down and silk screen a can of tomato soup 👀🥱

Vincent sold his first painting to the Parisian paint and art dealer Julien Tanguy, and his brother, Theo, successfully sold another work to a gallery in London. The Red Vineyard [the Pushkin Museum of Fine Arts, Moscow], which Vincent painted in 1888, was bought by Anna Boch, the sister of Vincent's friend Eugene Boch. Having known a little bit abt his childhood, I feel it may have influenced his art. As has been mentioned before, he grew up,with a single mom who worked hard to support her family. As a kid, he came home to an empty house. In his paintings, the light is always on, the hearth is warm and inviting inside, which implies mom is home. The abundance of flowers and beautiful home, is a place of plenty, where those inside have everything they need. Who knows?
