Wow. The coolest part of the range is the electronic targets. I was wondering at the beginning of the video “how do the targets work? Do they have to travel across the road to set up paper targets? Are the targets metal and get spray painted over so you can see bullet impacts?” Using pressure waves to triangulate the bullet impact is by far way more satisfying. It tickles my engineer brain.

In the older days you had Humans under the Targets sitting on a chair. If the shots were shot they stood up and inspected the Target and covered the holes or changed the Target. After that they waved a colored Flag depending on the Pointring you hit.

Funnily enough, this range is not unique in Switzerland for shooting over an active road. There are plenty more, for example the ones of Chrüzegg (near Menzingen, ZG) and Grynau (near Tuggen, SZ). It is always interesting driving under them in a convertible, when you can really notice the shots being fired overhead.

I love to see you pointing a light at responsible gun ownership. A population can be armed and very safe, it all has to do with environment and training. The gun club I'm a member at here in the states opened in 1956, and they've never had a single serious firearm-related incident or accident, and yes, if you attempted to break a safety rule in malice or in ineptitude, you would quickly be shown either the asphalt or the right way to operate. This was cool to hear. I took 2 semesters of German in high school, as well as having a German exchange student come live with us for 6 months, so I learned a decent bit of German. Let me tell you, it is an entirely different thing to hear someone speak Swiss German. Little things you notice that you're like "That was right, but why did it not SOUND right?" its very interesting.

The point Tom makes is that a murder at a gun range is no more likely than a murder anywhere else because being surrounded by trained military men essentially balances out the increased presence of firearms.

Agreed. "Military service" is not an indicator of firearm proficiency when the base line standard for weapons handling and marksmanship is in the same class as what can be taught to a child in an afternoon. Civilian training often far exceeds most military training except in certain units. Olympic shooters are usually young men and women between 16 and 28, trending towards the teenage years.

I remember hearing stories aboutt how US armorers literally wouldn't let you turn in your weapon if it had even a single fleck of carbon buildup on the most otherwise finely polished receiver, and would earn a whole string of curses from a soldier as they're forced to take their riffle back and clean it again

You're not wrong. Here in the UK, I own guns as do all members of my shooting club. We are all very competent and safe. We had a former squadie join a year or two back and he had some of the worst rifle handling skills I've seen (he's since left). The British public have been brainwashed into fearing guns and also brainwashed into thinking only the police and military are safe enough to own and handle them. The reality is that most private citizens in the UK who own guns are at least as competent as the police and military, and often more so. People in the UK has been indoctrinated into thinking anyone who owns a gun here is like a 2A nutter in the USA, but that's not even close to being true.

I do think there needs to be a balance. As a owner of multiple firearms I invest a lot of time in my training. Even though it is a right to own firearms in the USA, I treat it as a privilege. My friends and I when we go to the range we hold each other at the highest standards of safety. No one takes it personally when we speak up against potential unsafe practices. The tool is not the dangerous part, its always the behavior and attitude of the people using it that is.

But seeing how the wall is 30 cm (about 12 inch) think and how the original trajectory of riffle is somewhat upwards, I would like to say that it is impossible for that to happen

I still think in shootings, wherever they are, proper training isn't the problem because that would suggest mass shootings aren't commited by trained vets or just people with a lot of experience with firearms. Clearly it's a cultural/mental health issue in places where shootings are a problem. Anyone willingly killing people at random has deep unresolved issues and the sooner we focus on making this a priority, especially in schools, the better. I've had issues with depression and anxiety but never even learned about what that is until I had it AFTER I was done with the public education system. That's messed up.

While you definitely have a point, you also can't deny that the European process of tying gun ownership to mandatory gun training AND medical exam AND background check still helps to reduce the possibility of the situation of a loaded weapon in the hand of an untrained and/or mentally unstable person. At the very least it make sit much harder for criminals or would-be mass shooters to get guns, while in some US states any nutjob can walk into a gun store and walk out with a high-power rifle and plenty of ammo, then order a full-auto conversion kit online.

A lot of the people who want stricter gun laws in the US are not against gun ownership, they just want regulations to help keeping them out of the wrong hands.

I don't know who said it, or even if it's true, but it was said by one Japanese officer during WWII, that with regards to an invasion of the U.S: "There's a rifle behind every blade of grass." It was only a ½ year course but still learned a lot. I also took an abnormal psych class senior year but that was an elective.

For example one of the requirements was that for a full day the "menu" couldnt have more than 2300 calories. So in other words about 766ish callories per meal per day. This was a whole semester as well. the second half of the year was dedicated to the affect of malnourishment

I remember a shooting range I went to in Kent many years ago, it backed onto the Thames Estuary. I was firing either the LMG (Bren) or GPMG.

Every time a large ship came up the Estuary we all had to stop shooting because you could theoretically shoot the passing ship, I think that most of them were container ships but I know there was a gas terminal somewhere not too far away so an automatic rifle hurling 7.62 at a floating gas cylinder probably isn't great for the local landscape.

I was traveling to Hawaii a few years ago and saw that there was a gun range a few miles down the coast from where I was going to be staying. I checked it out on Google Maps and soon realized that the backstop was an extinct volcano... OK, technically, if you are shooting anywhere in Hawaii and it is not towards the ocean, you are shooting towards a volcano, but having never shot at a volcano before, I just had to take my M1911 with me and go to the range...

There's actually a range about 2 or 3 hours drive from me on the way the the cabin we go to and on one of the mountain highways has a rifle range that shoots over it. It goes from one mountain to the other. It's usually used by people who are obviously training for long range shooting competitions and such.
Edit: It's in Pennsylvania. I believe they might actually also use it as a way to allow handicapped people that rely on wheelchairs to still hunt. They have a spotter to help them using a large spotting scope and such.

@agustin venegas Laying down while shooting does indeed make you much more likely to hit your target well as it is much more stable than standing up or shooting from a crouching position. You can compete in many different ways of shooting, at very varying distances. What's a good score in one competition might be a rather disapointing score in another because of the varying difficulty. All competitions are equally difficult though, as your competitors have just the same situation as you.

we have one here too, normal shooting range have various stages up to 200 meter, but those using mouser had to shoot from the 350 meter, which was through the forest, over a road everyone use to daily driving and there was a raised ground/hill and then smashed down logs so people could lie down and shoot, but they were about 10 meter above the road in total when shooting to the targets on the range....also, I think it was only those who were in the Home Guard which i guess is similar to USA national guard? or what those people in rambo 1? civilians with some some training with military arms that will assist military if something happens

I don't know of any today, but not far from where I live in North Wales there was a Victorian era firing range that shot over a road like this...I have also visited a large country estate in southern England where the firing point was on the terrace of the "big house" and the targets (very large steel gongs) were a 1000 yards away, and the trajectory took the bullets over country lanes and people's houses ect...Again I think that was Victorian era, maybe up to WW2.....

This is not the only shooting range in Switzerland that goes over a street. In the town where I live there is a shooting range where you shoot on the side of a hill, over a valley 300m wide and the targets are on the hill on the other side of the valley.
Also, when I was 13 years old my whole class helped at a shooting competition to write down the points of the shooters and control their licences. It was a good way to earn money and it was completely normal for the parents to let us work there, like any other job for teenagers. Everybody new that it was completely safe. There were even some kids our age shooting.

I've been at a gun range here in the US where a teenager who had come with two adults turned around (facing the seats) with a loaded gun in hand. The rangemaster walked over and told the adults they were being ejected, and the teen was banned for a year. The rest of the range (25 stalls) had stopped shooting, and everyone was shifting around to get out of the potential lines of fire. That's the thing about a bunch of trained shooters, nobody had to organize it, nobody had to tell anyone else what to do, they just did it.
When the two adults realized how much the situation had already escalated, they backed down and packed their things. The kid apologized, not to anyone in particular, but said he didn't mean to point it at anyone and he didn't mean anything by it. One of the guys who had been at the ready said, "We know - that's why you're still alive."

I live about 20 miles from a shooting range that shoots over a valley with a river running through it. The river is a very popular spot for swimming, boating and fishing- while enjoying the river you will hear gunshots and periodically bullets hit a cliff on across the river from the range. Nobody has ever been hurt. The cliff side where the bullets hit and the surrounding area are inaccessible, so there is no chance of someone wondering into the path of a bullet.

When Europeans travel to our area I always take them to this river so they can listen to gunfire and watch how causally Americans go about their recreation. This is usually a huge culture shock for most Europeans I have met.

Indeed, not to mention that their geography (mountains, small passes and tunnels) make it bloody hard invade (hell, in WW2 they build a lot of defenses and while most of those were either abandoned or even filled in, I doubt that makeshift stuff couldn't be installed within hours! Not to mention that they still make their own arms domestically, so they have no supply issues for a while!

@DreamingFlurry also for a while every engineer who made a bridge also had to make a demo plan and then the bridge was built with explosives already primed. They only stopped sometime recently because it is very expensive to do and look at their nieghbors, nobody has any plans of invading them.

I doubt any EU or NATO states would desire let alone attempt a war of agression inside of Europe, especially with the rest of NATO being required to defend eachother. While Switzerland is not apart of either (very agressively neutral) its safe to say that NATO would defend them, the same way the USA would defend any country in North America from an invasion from a different continent. (Super powers don't like other superpowers messing with their neighbors, its bad for security).

In Switzerland you can go to the "Jungschützen" which is the juniors (15-20y) section of those shooting ranges, for free! Teenagers learn how to shoot with the rifle you shot, stgw 90, over 300m. You also learn the most important thing, gun safety! It's very ingrained in our society, everyone I know that owns a gun has the necessary training and respect. Back when I was still a member of the shooting range, around 17 years old, I would have my personal assault rifle at home, but we would leave a piece (Verschluss idk the word in english) and the ammunition at the shooting range. I would walk through the main train station and would ride the train with the rifle on my back to go to the shooting range. No one ever bat an eye.

I find firearms mechanically interesting, but the prevalent culture around them in the US (and here in Texas especially) makes me too uncomfortable to consider that interest worth pursuing. You should check out the German city of Munster, Lower Saxony (NOT Münster!). The German army (Bundeswehr) has two military training areas north and south of the city which they use to fire long range artillery over the city. When you're in the city, you can see the projectiles flying over you and hear the distant sound of warfare, very idyllic.

Seems like the area between the wall and the road would be a nice spot for a military training or administrative area. Becoming accustomed to operating normally with bullets occasionally flying overhead might be beneficial. This range is probably no more dangerous than where I live in the US. An Air Force base is about three miles from my house. B52’s are taking off or on a landing pattern at least fifty times a day. Right over my house. A lot of times doing touch downs and taking right back off, circle around and do it again. I guess if one crashes it’d go above a quarter of a mile wiping everything out. I believe the range might be safer.

Most European countries have similar laws to Switzerland in these situations where you can get a firearms permit after showing that you're qualified by using them for a year at a range and then completing a safety course. They just don't have the exception where you can keep your firearm after finishing conscription and also few have conscription anymore.

Exactly, almost no one miss the target, let alone shoot so porely to get the wall. I was on the youth shooting club with 15, with really quick basic training you always shoot on target. And you sow also Tom, with no experience seems, didn't do a great score but put every round on target. In addition there is anyway regular check to make sure the range is up to date and ensuring the safety mesures state of the art.
