Bach soll ja über dieses Lied gesagt haben, dass er es hätte schreiben müssen, wenn es nicht schon geschrieben worden wäre. Und für wahr, egal in welcher Melodie- oder Textfassung, es dringt immer tief in die Seele ein. Wohl eines der schönsten Werke, die je verfasst wurden!

Beautifully performed and thank you for sharing. But you might wish to amend your notes - Isaac would have had a bit of a job composing the piece in 1539, having been dead for around 20 years by that time!

please help, there is another piece of music whose opening sounds very similar to this piece's. Very famous, my brain just can't locate the name, and it's driving me crazy! EDIT: the neurons finally fired - I was thinking of the motive of Saint-Saëns' 3rd Symphony in C minor.

There's also a Christian hymn from the 17th century "O Esca Viatorum" (nowadays sung in English as "O Food of Exiles Lowly) which follows the same or nearly the same melody. And then, in Bach's St. John's Passion, there is a section where they use this melody. The ONLY reason I know this is not because I have an ounce of culture in me, but just because I heard the tune somewhere and it was driving me crazy too lol
