Sugar Daddy
Thompson Twins Lyrics

Jump to: Overall Meaning ↴  Line by Line Meaning ↴

Well you're all grown up and lookin good
Been painting your face like a geisha would
Been practicing the art of treachery
Little girls learn this at their mother's knee

Sugar Daddy gonna me you happy
Sugar Daddy gonna make it nice
Sugar Daddy gonna give you candy
But you're gonna pay Sugar Daddy's price

Well I know what you want and you know how to get it
Nothing but money gonna make you feel better
I'll buy you a dress and I'll buy you a car
I might even buy you an electric guitar

Sugar Daddy gonna me you happy
Sugar Daddy gonna make it nice
Sugar Daddy gonna give you candy
But you're gonna pay Sugar Daddy's price

(Sugar) Oh smile for the camera
(Sugar) Yeah smile for the world
(Sugar) Oh smile....give me your best smile
(Sugar) Like a sweet little girl

So don't bother me with all your personal life
And I will ignore your little white lies
And when the fairy falls from the Christmas tree
Don't ever think that you can run to me

Sugar Daddy gonna me you happy
Sugar Daddy gonna make it nice
Sugar Daddy gonna give you candy
But you're gonna pay Sugar Daddy's price

Yeah Sugar Daddy gonna make you happy
Sugar Daddy gonna make it right
Sugar Daddy gonna give you candy
But you're gonna pay
Yeah, you're gonna pay Sugar Daddy's price
Yeah yeah yeah
Yeah yeah yeah
Yeah yeah yeah
Yeah yeah yeah

FADE
Yeah yeah yeah
Yeah yeah yeah

Overall Meaning

The Thompson Twins' song Sugar Daddy is a warning to young women about the dangers of seeking financial security at any cost. The lyrics suggest that the singer has given up her integrity and self-respect to a wealthy man in exchange for his wealth and power. The song starts off by describing how she has transformed herself into a geisha-like figure, emphasizing how she has been taught to manipulate and deceive men from a young age. The reference to "little girls learning this at their mother's knee" implies that this behavior is learned and perpetuated by mothers who value financial security above all else.

The chorus then comes in, showing how the Sugar Daddy can indeed provide her with candy and other material possessions. However, the price she must pay is her own dignity and self-worth. The verses further elaborate on how he controls her, how he already knows what she wants and needs, and how he can ignore her faults as long as she "pays the price."

Towards the end of the song, there is an interesting switch in perspective. The singer tells the singer that she should not bother him with her personal life and that he will ignore her lies while also implying that she cannot come to him when things go wrong. This suggests that the Sugar Daddy has always had the upper hand and that she is truly trapped in this toxic relationship.
