1. Thou is a doom/sludge/drone metal band from Baton Rouge and New Orleans, Louisiana, USA. Their lyrics deal mostly with social decay, death and general despair. All of their recorded music, after a period of time, is posted for free on Bandcamp or here
Despite having only released five full-lengths — Tyrant, Peasant, Summit, Heathen, and Magus — Thou have an extensive and varied discography. The band have released several EPs, including a collection of Black Sabbath covers Through the Empires of Eternal Void and splits/collaborations with bands such as Kowloon Walled City, Leech, Emma Ruth Rundle, The Body and Hell.
Thou are quite involved in the New Orleans DIY scene, and, as stated above, make all of their music available for free.
2. Another Thou is a Belgian band. Early on, they had an electro sound, but have grown to sound more along the lines of pop rock. It is said that Thou is the most underestimated band in the Belgian music scene because of their already ten year long career and with very little success. They are set to release a bunch of new songs, called "This is Not a Record," available only on the internet (iTunes, eMusic). here
Cold World
Thou Lyrics
Jump to: Overall Meaning ↴ Line by Line Meaning ↴
It's a cold world to walk alone in.
You need some side to start belonging.
There's always open arms in the war.
The out crowd is laughing at you.
A man with a badge appears, saying, "It's warm. Come inside."
Kid, you got no real agendas.
There's always open arms in the war.
The lyrics of the song "Cold World" by Thou explores the feelings of loneliness, isolation and the desperate need to belong. The first line of the song "It's a cold world to walk alone in" signifies the challenges and difficulties that come with being isolated and abandoned by the world around us. The feeling of being unwanted and unappreciated is highlighted in the following line, "You need some side to start belonging." It expresses the pain of being excluded from a group and the lack of camaraderie and human connections.
The song talks about the constant battle between those who are accepted and those left out of the group. The lines, "The out crowd is laughing at you," further demonstrates this struggle. The inclusion of a man with a badge representing authority, asking someone to "come inside" shows that societal pressure and conformity can force people to act or behave in ways that are not true to their individual selves.
The song also touches on how the world can be unkind and forgetful, with lines like "All the good you've done been's forgotten." While there are open arms in the war, the lyrics also convey that we must be wary of empty promises that offer temporary relief from our isolation instead of finding genuine acceptance and love from those around us.
