The part that got me was the last part, after I finally realized that this guy was "put into" one of the original disc they had, but the thing that got me was the fact that, all the music he heard in the beginning were other people who had the same fate, but when he became the disc that was playing, the person before was erased into nothingness.

My take is that the Phonograph was cursed and mesmerized the wife to the point she was basically a zombie addicted to listening to it and nothing else. The only way to get his love back was to sacrifice himself to whatever jealous entity was controlling it, so now he possesses the phonograph, as well as his wife's ear for all time.
