In The Ghetto
Three 6 Mafia Ft Elvis Presley Lyrics

Jump to: Overall Meaning ↴  Line by Line Meaning ↴

As the snow flies
On a cold and gray Chicago mornin'
A poor little baby child is born
In the ghetto (in the ghetto)

And his mama cries
'Cause if there's one thing that she don't need
It's another hungry mouth to feed
In the ghetto (in the ghetto)

People, don't you understand
The child needs a helping hand
Or he'll grow to be an angry young man some day?
Take a look at you and me
Are we too blind to see?
Do we simply turn our heads and look the other way?

Well, the world turns
And a hungry little boy with a runny nose
Plays in the street as the cold wind blows
In the ghetto (in the ghetto)

And his hunger burns
So he starts to roam the streets at night
And he learns how to steal, and he learns how to fight
In the ghetto (in the ghetto)

Then one night in desperation
The young man breaks away
He buys a gun, steals a car
Tries to run, but he don't get far
And his mama cries

As a crowd gathers 'round an angry young man
Face down on the street with a gun in his hand
In the ghetto (in the ghetto)

And as her young man dies (in the ghetto)
On a cold and gray Chicago mornin'
Another little baby child is born
In the ghetto (in the ghetto)

And his mama cries (in the ghetto)

(In the ghetto)
(Ah)

Overall Meaning

The song "In the Ghetto" by Three 6 Mafia featuring Elvis Presley is a powerful commentary on poverty and its devastating effects on families and communities. The lyrics begin with a scene of a cold and gray Chicago morning, where a poor baby is born into the ghetto. The baby's mother cries because she knows the struggles they will face in trying to survive and provide for another hungry mouth in the already struggling neighborhood. The song calls on society to recognize the importance of helping those in need, or else face the consequences of creating "angry young men" who may resort to crime and violence in order to survive.

The imagery presented in the lyrics creates a sense of hopelessness and despair. The hunger and cold that the young boy experiences are harsh realities of poverty that are often overlooked by those who are not affected by it. The song even paints a picture of a young man turning to crime out of desperation, which ultimately leads to his death at a young age. The tragedy and cyclical nature of poverty are echoed in the final verse of the song, where the birth of a new baby highlights the unending struggles faced by those living in impoverished neighborhoods.

The song is a powerful statement on the social and economic inequality that plagues many communities in the United States. It highlights the need for societal change and action to address poverty as a whole, rather than placing the responsibility solely on those living in poverty.

THIS MUST BE RE-RELEASED (and with a longer mix). THIS is PURE GOLD. A HIT that was overlooked and crosses over into different genres, different generations, different cultures and LIKE ELVIS, mixes them all together to come up with something brilliant, fresh and new. Doubt the guys will ever see this, but damn, THIS STILL has legs... it would sad as hell to see this slip into total obscurity.

@angelika_munkastrap4634

I knoooow right, it needs way more done with it, longer, an intro, more verses telling their story, it's like as soon as it starts it's over

@ludotoyhunter8492

They wouldn’t clear the samples for the song to be released. The Elvis estate wasn’t coming up off the permission slip!😂😂😂😂😂😂😂😂😂

@MPK112233

I love this song, a hidden gem that will sadly, unlikely be properly released. Maybe one day Paul will drop it. Not even sure if it's been properly mixed. Feels like there was another verse or two left off, maybe they had a feature planned.

@samuraicollins2218

@@ludotoyhunter8492 u absolutely correct. I was working for EPE(Elvis Presley Enterprise) around the time this album was about to drop and they wouldn't clear the sample which was dumb as hell because the shit would've been a hit

@ludotoyhunter8492

@Samurai Collins I could hear it now: “who wants it? The satanic mafia? What? Oh, three six? What’re they a heavy metal…wait huh? Hip hop? The rapper bang bang killer guys? They want Elvis music?! Oh that’s easy. HELL NO!!!!!!!”🤣🤣🤣🤣🤣🤣🤣🤣🤣🤣 and from experience you KNOW DAMN WELL I aint lying!!!

I was watching a reaction video of Elvis and the Black Community and seen these guys speaking and remixing Elvis's song In the Ghetto. It sounded good during that documentary so can here to listen to the entire song. Not a fan of rap I did enjoy this and pretty much describes how life is for some unfortunately. What's bad is when the song was wrote originally, years later Elvis recorded it, and now there are so many families STILL living in that situation. So as much as technology has advanced and our country grew...living below poverty & struggling to survive is still occurring. 🥺

@shayrie444

I just did the same

@NyQuilDonut

It's too bad they didn't make more verses for this. I'm not a 36 Mafia fan but this was a really good idea to sample this song.

@taydub88

How is one not a three 6 mafia fan?
