Just Like You
Three Days Grace Lyrics

Jump to: Overall Meaning ↴  Line by Line Meaning ↴

I could be mean
I could be angry
You know I could be just like you

I could be fake
I could be stupid
You know I could be just like you
You thought you were standing beside me
You were only in my way
You're wrong if you think that I'll be just like you
You thought you were there to guide me
You were only in my way
You're wrong if you think that I'll be
Just like you

I could be cold
I could be ruthless
You know I could be just like you

I could be weak
I could be senseless
You know I could be just like you

You thought you were standing beside me
You were only in my way
You're wrong if you think that I'll be just like you
You thought you were there to guide me
You were only in my way
You're wrong if you think that I'll be
Just like you

On my own, cause I can't take livin' with you
I'm alone, so I won't turn out like
You want me to

I could be cold
I could be ruthless
You know I could be just like you

I could be weak

I could be senseless
You know I could be just like you

Overall Meaning

The lyrics to Three Days Grace's song "Just Like You" explore the concept of nature versus nurture in personality development. The singer is acknowledging that they have the capacity to possess negative traits and behaviors just like the person they are addressing. The tone is defiant, with the singer rejecting the idea that they will inevitably turn out like the person trying to influence them. The lyrics reveal that the person thinks they are being guided but in reality, they are just in the way, implying that the person may be over controlling or manipulative. The repetition of the phrase "just like you" emphasizes the singer's awareness of the potential for negative traits and behavior.

The line "on my own, cause I can't take livin' with you" highlights that the singer is making a conscious choice to distance themselves from the person they are addressing in order to prevent taking on their negative qualities. The idea that someone's personality can be influenced by their environment rather than being innate is also suggested in the lyrics. For example, the singer acknowledges that they could "be fake" or "senseless," implying that these traits could potentially be learned from others.

Three Days Grace's first ever number one hit on the Billboard Modern Rock Tracks and Hot Mainstream Rock Tracks charts. Adam Gontier reflected on the meaning behind this song; he said:
"It's about being told how to live your life. When we were growing up, we saw it sort of first hand. A lot of our friends were pushed into doing jobs their parents were telling them to do. It's about being pushed around and told how to live your life and standing up for yourself."

@Radioswim

Adam McCann Point taken.

Even so, I'll never understand this "I miss the old [insert group here]" comment, as the new music does not replace the old.

You're very very rarely going to find a group that consistently releases albums with similar quality and nearly similar sound. Musical evolution is inevitable, so any hopes for congruity is simply a pipe dream.

And when you do have congruity, more often than not it just starts to stagnate. Such is the case for me and Three Days Grace, among other groups.

I should probably add that I haven't been a huge fan of three days grace, I mostly just think their music is... averagely decent? I guess I would say.
