The Earth Isn't Humming
Thrice Lyrics

Jump to: Overall Meaning ↴  Line by Line Meaning ↴

I hear these times are the end.
And another one must fall down.
I don't think I believe it.
When another one must fall down.
Give us the distance.
And another one will fall down.

The sun in the open sky.
Fall down, fall down
Stare back into my own eyes.
Fall down, fall down
A stranger in my own skin.
Fall down, fall down

One decade later.
And another one must fall down.
The earth isn't humming.
I watched them all fall down.
Fell into the sound in front of me.
Unchanged by those around.
Directionless.
An open sea.
We'll watch as time tumbles down.

The sun in the open sky.
Fall down, fall down
Stare back into my own eyes.
Fall down, fall down
A stranger in my own skin.
Fall down, fall down

Overall Meaning

With "The Earth Isn't Humming," Thrice presents an apocalyptic narrative that reflects the anxieties and fears of contemporary times. The repeated lines "and another one must fall down" suggest an inevitable sense of destruction and loss, a feeling that resounds throughout the song's lyrics. The song references the sun, the earth, and the sea, symbolizing powerful natural forces that are beyond human control. The singer describes feeling "a stranger in my own skin," hinting at a sense of personal disorientation within a larger societal collapse.

The song's refrain of "fall down" reinforces the theme of collapse and loss, but it is also a call to action - perhaps suggesting the need to rebuild or redefine oneself in the aftermath of such devastation. Through its haunting melody and thought-provoking lyrics, "The Earth Isn't Humming" presents a stark portrait of humanity's vulnerability amidst the vast and unpredictable forces of nature.

I did not know until today that this was a cover of a song by Frodus! The more you know! Well, I'm grateful, it fits this album's theme phenomenally.

Me neither. When I introduced a friend to this song when it came out, he told me that it wasn’t original at all. He told me it was written by a band called Frodus. He was right. This version is better though

Ppl keep saying such things like they're happy...

And they used to call me a quitter...

I've said it countless times but: self-inflicted prophecies and welcoming (& causing) more misery, and accepting/recycling/mimicking all the roots of probs are part of the ever-increasing and multiplying problems... Consequences of choices and priorities are pretty simple if you pay the slightest attention.

Am I being vague again? Perhaps, but who is ever wanting the bigger versions? I've tried in many ways, most ppl prefer the convenience and being silly/crazy/careless ...which does prove they deserve whatever hits them, but surely doesn't justify the misery of the ones who don't deserve any of the consequences of choices of others.

And I certainly care about and value the latter ppl and beings rather than the rest who are more or less guilty and partying, so...
