The Weight
Thrice Lyrics

Jump to: Overall Meaning ↴  Line by Line Meaning ↴

There's many who'll tell you they'll give you their love,
But when they say "give" they mean "take."
They'll hang 'round just like vultures till push comes to shove.
They'll take flight when the earth starts to shake.

Someone may say that they'll always be true,
Then slip out the door 'fore the dawn.
But I won't leave you hanging on.
Another may stay till they find someone new,
Then before you know they'll be gone.
But I won't leave you hanging on;
No, I won't be that someone.

And come what may, I won't abandon you or leave you behind
Because love is a loyalty sworn, not a burning for a moment.
And come what may, I will be standing right here by your side;
I won't run away, though the storm's getting worse
And there's no end in sight.

Some talk of destiny, others of fate,
But soon they'll be saying goodbye.
But I won't leave you high and dry.
Because a ring don't mean nothing
If you can't haul the weight,
And some of them won't even try,
But I won't leave you high and dry;
I won't leave you wondering why.

And storms will surely come,
But true love is a choice you must make

And you're the one that I have set my heart to choose.
As long as I live, I swear I'll see this through.

Overall Meaning

Thrice's "The Weight" speaks about loyalty and commitment in a relationship while emphasizing an essential element, as expressed in the phrase, "love is a loyalty sworn, not a burning for a moment." The song opens with a warning to the listener not to be fooled by those who speak of giving love but instead mean to take it. The lyrics describe people who stick around while everything runs smoothly but hastily fly away when problems arise. The singer promises to be there to stick through the thick and the thin, unwavering in commitment because love is a choice that one has to make.

The second verse warns about the futility of getting emotionally invested in the idea of destiny and fate. The song points out that the rings worn in celebration of commitment mean nothing if one is not willing to put in the required effort to haul the weight of maintaining a lasting relationship. The bridge reaffirms that love is a choice that requires work, and the singer chooses the listener to carry out this decision. Finally, the chorus reinforces the singer's vow to stand by the listener's side despite any storm that may come their way.

In summary, "The Weight" is a testament to the loyalty and commitment needed to sustain a lasting relationship. This song emphasizes the importance of a partner's unwavering support to withstand any challenge against the couple's relationship. The song's intonation forges a unity of two people ready to face everything that comes their way because love surpasses every storm.

this song was the first song i heard by thrice, and it made my dad cry.
the reason my father always cries at this song is because my mother cheated on him for a very long time. he was devastated when she told him they would soon get divorced.
the lyrics have meaning. many people don’t realise how many lyrics can hit home.
“And come what may, I won’t abandon you or leave you behind,
Because love is a loyalty sworn, not a burning for a moment.
Come what may, I will be standing right here by your side,
I won’t run away, though the storm’s getting worse and there’s no end in sight.”
this represents that despite the fact my mother cheated, my father would always love her. and they were divorced about 8 years ago. he isn’t over her.
i recently saw thrice live and my dad got choked up when they played a few songs, especially daedalus. because thrice can mean more than just rock music to listen to. thrice is one of my favorite bands now, thanks to my father.

[Verse 1]
There’s many who’ll tell you they’ll give you their love
But when they say "give" they mean "take"
They hang ‘round just like vultures 'til push comes to shove
And take flight when the earth starts to shake

Someone may say that they’ll always be true
Then slip out the door ‘fore the dawn
But I won’t leave you hanging on

Another may stay 'til they find someone new
Then before you know they’ll be gone
But I won’t leave you hanging on

No, I won’t, won't be that someone

[Chorus]
And come what may, I won’t abandon you or leave you behind
Because love is a loyalty sworn, not a burning for a moment
Come what may, I will be standing right here by your side
I won’t run away, though the storm’s getting worse and there’s no end in sight

[Verse 2]
Some talk of destiny, others of fate
But soon they’ll be saying goodbye
But I won’t leave you high and dry

'Cause a ring don’t mean nothing if you can’t haul the weight
And some of them won’t even try
But I won’t leave you high and dry

I won’t leave you wondering why

[Chorus]

[Bridge]
And storms will surely come
But true love is a choice you must make and you are the one
That I have set my heart to choose
As long as I live, I swear I’ll see this through

[Altered Chorus]
Come what may, I won’t abandon you or leave you behind
Because love is a loyalty sworn, not a burning for a moment
Come what may, I will be standing right here by your side
I won’t run away, though the storm’s getting worse and I see no end

[Altered Chorus 2]
Come what may, I won’t abandon you or leave you behind
Because love is a loyalty sworn, not a burning for a moment
Come what may, I will be standing right here by your side
I won’t run away, though the storm’s getting worse and there’s no end in sight

Funny how this song managed to relate so well with me :p
(Warning, this one is a long, personal history)
I had a girlfriend for 4 years.
She broke up with me, and even though my thoughts about love are different (in sync with this masterpiece) I feel she was reasonable and understanding with me.
Anyway, the lyrics in this song are a mirror of my feelings and how I acted toward her.
I felt like my love to her wasn't only about that initial flame, even though it was there I knew it would probably fade, the human mind works like that, we get excited with new things and eventually get used to them, which leads to indifference.
I never gave her up though, my love was truly a "loyalty sworn".
I never even thought about betraying her, not once. I would look at other girls, I would have that "she's cute" thought about some passerby or some friend but even when I was angry or felt unsure about my relationship, even with all the hardships, the thought of being with another person was non-existent.
And I had opportunities!
I had beautiful girls that might have given me things she didn't, things I wanted, but I wouldn't have it another way.
I was 100% committed to that girl, and I really believed I would spend my life by her side, and even though I somehow managed to get over it and tried once (another one that broke up recently 😂) to move on, I still think that the girl I spent 4 years with is the ideal woman.
The only regrets I have is not being able to keep the promise I made her, because I was and probably I am still not the ideal man for her.
And even though I am a hypocrite who says I am happy as long as she's alright, I still and probably will forever miss being by her side.

My sister was like hey you should learn this one song on guitar and when I heard I was like hmm that wasn't bad. 4 years have passed and I've been obsessed with this band. For two years straight, Thrice was the only band you could find on my mp3. I would listen to them everyday. I still love them just as much. They are the reason I have a passion for anything let alone a passion for music. And to think it was this one song that started it all

Ur gulp

Cool
