We Have Ways to Hurt You
Throes of Dawn Lyrics

Jump to: Overall Meaning ↴  Line by Line Meaning ↴

Another me
Another you

We wear the best of our masks
In this masquerade
Of the all-lost emotion
Of all decay
We stand apart
Infected by the sick world
In satin longues
In velvet rooms
The symptoms growing worse

Camouflaged
Among the empty
Court jesters
Lost kings
This is life
This is life

This is life
We take from you

Overall Meaning

The lyrics of Throes of Dawn's song We Have Ways to Hurt You reflects on the human tendency of putting up a façade to hide their true selves in order to fit in with society. The lines "Another me, another you, we wear the best of our masks" emphasizes on this concept of putting on a persona to avoid being exposed to the world. The mask here symbolizes the fake personalities we tend to wear to blend in with the crowd and the line "In satin longues, in velvet rooms" emphasizes on the luxurious world we create for ourselves, trying to hide our vulnerabilities from the world.

The song also speaks about the decaying world around us and how it affects us. The line "infected by the sick world" implies how the negativity around us affects our mental state and the line "the symptoms growing worse" symbolizes the gradual decline we face as we try to push our real selves away from the world.

Moreover, the last line "We take from you" represents the inevitable truth of how our fake personalities tend to manipulate people for their own gain, either consciously or subconsciously.

Overall, the lyrics of the song depict a society where people wear masks to fit in and hide their true selves and the consequences that come with it.

@oabbasi Yeah, I definitely preferred their older material. My favorite song was Black Carbon Snow. I first came upon the song when I started getting more and more into keyboard infused Symphonic metal. When I first heard it, my mind was BLOWN. Even today, I go back to that song as often as I can. It's just one of those rare examples of Metal nostalgia that you can listen to years from now, and it will still sound AMAZING each and every time. I really miss the raspy Black Metal vocals :-(
