Lava Lamp
Thundercat Lyrics

Jump to: Overall Meaning ↴  Line by Line Meaning ↴

Oh oh oh
Sometimes you have to let go
To free fall away
I won't judge you anymore
'Cause sometimes I needed to
Free fall far away
Out of sight, out of mind

I'm so tired
Where can I lay my head?
I'll just close my eyes
Hope I wake up dead
Don't want to live without you
Don't leave me out here to die

Maybe another time and space
When I look you in the face
Far, far away
Maybe in another life

Overall Meaning

The lyrics of "Lava Lamp" by Thundercat explore themes of letting go, falling away, and the pain that comes with losing someone. The first verse speaks of the act of freeing yourself from a negative situation or person, acknowledging that sometimes it's necessary to let go in order to move on. The lyrics suggest that this process can involve risk and uncertainty, but it's a chance that must be taken in order to find inner peace.

In the second verse, the lyrics express a sense of exhaustion, both physical and emotional. The singer is unable to find rest, asking where they can lay their head, and expresses a desire to escape the pain and longing they feel. The chorus echoes this feeling, with the singer begging their loved one not to leave them alone, knowing that life without them would be unbearable. The final lines of the song suggest the possibility of finding closure in another life or realm.

Overall, "Lava Lamp" is a poignant exploration of the struggle, pain, and eventual hope that can come with letting go of someone you love. It acknowledges the difficulties in moving on from toxic relationships while expressing the hope that there may be a chance for redemption in the future.

I remember one of the first times I heard this song was while driving for Postmates at night to get extra money for baby stuff (my wife was 6 months pregnant with our first at the time). This song always puts me right back in that moment of a cold winter night, being the only car out on the road and feeling very alone.

i enjoy that thundercat puts laughable quips and jokes in many of his other tracks on this record, but for just this track. this one track. he pulls it together backed by the masterful production and sings soulful melodies on top of melancholic bass chords. no funny shit, just singing.
