Accidents
Thunderclap Newman Lyrics

Jump to: Overall Meaning ↴  Line by Line Meaning ↴

I see Johnny in the middle of a roundabout, playing
In his hand was a paper aeroplane
Then I looked around
And he was gone
Am I to blame

I see Mary standing by the river side, waiting
She thinks the queen is coming by
Then I looked around
And she was gone
Why

(lalalalalalalala)

There's a thousand answers that I don't know
I don't know
I know how

There's a thousand feelings that I can't show
I can't show
Just right now

I see Simon standing on the railway bridge, spotting
He's waiting there to see the fastest train
Then I looked around
And he was gone
Am I to blame

I see Jimmy climbing on the milkman's van, laughing…

Now Mary and Johnny are all together
And Simon and Jimmy are free
To touch anything and everything they see

I see Jimmy climbing on the milkman's van, laughing
On his feet were a pair of granddad's shoes
Then I looked around
And he was gone
Are we to lose

Life's just a game, you fly a paper plane, there is no aim
Life's just a game, you fly a paper plane, there is no aim
Life's just a game, you fly a paper plane, there is no aim

Overall Meaning

The lyrics to Thunderclap Newman's song "Accidents" describe three different individuals in separate situations: Johnny in the middle of a roundabout playing with a paper airplane, Mary waiting by the riverbank for the queen to come by, and Simon standing on a railway bridge waiting to see the fastest train. However, the singer quickly realizes that each person has disappeared, leaving him/her to question whether or not they are to blame for the disappearance. The chorus reflects on the idea that life is just a game with no aim, illustrated by the imagery of flying a paper airplane. Finally, at the end of the song, the singer notices that Mary and Johnny are together and Simon and Jimmy are free to touch anything they see, while Jimmy is seen climbing on the milkman's van wearing his granddad's shoes.
