Thursday released their debut album, Waiting, in late 1999 with original guitarist Bill Henderson, who left the band in 2000 and was replaced by Steve Pedulla. The band gained popularity with the release of their second album, Full Collapse, in 2001, and released their third album and major label debut, War All the Time, in 2003, which reached number seven on the US Billboard Top 200 Albums chart. Thursday released their fourth album, A City by the Light Divided, in 2006, and two further albums, Common Existence and No Devolución, before announcing an indefinite hiatus in 2011. In a January 2013 interview, Geoff Rickly confirmed that the band had actually disbanded. However, the band announced a reunion in 2016. Their reunion would conclude with a performance at Saint Vitus in Brooklyn, NY in March 2019.
The band has been considered influential to the post-hardcore music scene in the 2000s, and is credited as one of the key bands to popularize the darker emo sound and screaming vocals which came to prominence at the time.
A Hole In The World

And the exit sign offers no light to see by
Can we cast our shadows alone in the dark?
I can't see without you
When the world comes crashing down
Part with it
Start again
These notes will fold themselves
Standing at the margin's edge
To see where the daybreak ends
You can find compassion here
But the page turns too fast
We fell in this hole that opened up
Giving up on hope
Living without love
And we still type black lines
When the world comes crashing down
These notes will fold themselves
Adjust the aperture to focus on the negative
Like phosphors in the darkroom ignite
Like dodging faces in the corner of the print
Frame by frame this hole is opening and we fall in
There is no such thing as whole
There is a hole in the world
The lyrics of Thursday's song "A Hole In The World" paints a picture of bleakness and despair. The song starts with the imagery of a blackout where inertia will hold our thoughts and the exit sign offers no light to see by. The singer wonders if they can cast their shadows alone in the dark, but ultimately concedes that they can't see without the presence of someone else. The chorus brings forth the idea of starting again when the world comes crashing down and letting go of the hopelessness that comes with it. The bridge is particularly poignant, with the idea of adjusting the aperture to focus on the negative and falling into a hole that represents the brokenness of the world around us. The song ends with the haunting statement that "There is no such thing as whole, There is a hole in the world."
The song addresses the idea of how hopelessness can hold us captive and how difficult it can be to move away from it. The imagery of being lost in the dark, falling into a hole, and not being able to see without someone else's presence indicates a feeling of isolation and despair. However, the song also calls for resilience and the courage to start again when everything falls apart. The idea of adjusting the aperture to focus on negativity and falling into a hole represents the idea of being consumed by the negative aspects of life, but the song also encourages finding compassion in the midst of all of it.

In a hole at the end of the world.
And his music got there.
