Thursday released their debut album, Waiting, in late 1999 with original guitarist Bill Henderson, who left the band in 2000 and was replaced by Steve Pedulla. The band gained popularity with the release of their second album, Full Collapse, in 2001, and released their third album and major label debut, War All the Time, in 2003, which reached number seven on the US Billboard Top 200 Albums chart. Thursday released their fourth album, A City by the Light Divided, in 2006, and two further albums, Common Existence and No Devolución, before announcing an indefinite hiatus in 2011. In a January 2013 interview, Geoff Rickly confirmed that the band had actually disbanded. However, the band announced a reunion in 2016. Their reunion would conclude with a performance at Saint Vitus in Brooklyn, NY in March 2019.
The band has been considered influential to the post-hardcore music scene in the 2000s, and is credited as one of the key bands to popularize the darker emo sound and screaming vocals which came to prominence at the time.

And so will you
When you do, bury me under them too
Seconds pass, we'll make it through
Eventually we all go home
It won't be long
It won't be long
You close your eyes like it's nothing at all
Throughout the rise and fall, everything, everything
Changes, I will be here when you die
It won't be long
It won't be long
Until we find our way home
Did you hear the trumpets play the day your father died?
Did a violin swell those circles under your eyes?
Did you play the part straight, like a marcher?
Get lost in the beat, thinking and feeling
Did the drums in the streets make the people dance?
Or fall to their knees as the sound?
Knock the leaves from the trees
As they fall from the branch, the look beautiful
As they hung in the air
Spinning around
Did you float in the air?
Spinning around
There must be somewhere that cigarettes burn through the night
And the leaves don't abandon their trees to the light
Where the skies always clear
And the summer never ends
Won't you take me there?
The leaves will fall
So will you
When you do, bury me
Under them too
Seconds pass; we'll make it through
Eventually we all are going home
"Autumn Leaves Revisited" by Thursday is a mournful yet reflective song that explores the themes of love, loss, and mortality. The song compares the falling of autumn leaves with the inevitability of death, as well as the cycle of life and the hope of finding peace in the afterlife. The opening lines, "The leaves will fall, and so will you, when you do, bury me under them too," express a desire to be buried in the same place as a loved one when they pass away, emphasizing the bond between the two.
The song also recognizes the temporary nature of life and the certainty of death. The lines, "Eventually we all go home, it won't be long, it won't be long," remind us that no matter how long we live, death is always waiting for us. However, there is comfort in knowing that we will all find our way home eventually.
The middle section of the song reflects on the memory of a loved one who has died. The lyrics ask if the trumpets played at their funeral, if the drums made people dance or fall to their knees, and if the leaves falling from the branches looked beautiful as they hung in the air. The questions show the importance of remembering those who have passed away and finding beauty in the moments of their lives.
Overall, "Autumn Leaves Revisited" is a poignant and reflective song that reminds us of the fleeting nature of life and the importance of cherishing the moments we have with the people we love.
