Ladies And Gentleman: My Brother The Failure
Thursday Lyrics

Jump to: Overall Meaning ↴  Line by Line Meaning ↴

He's dead drunk asleep on the side of the road (No one sees him)
Or passed out on pills in a stranger's room (She don't know him)
Don't tell his sweetheart, he's not coming home

Ladies and gentlemen
This is my blood! Yeah!

My brother's eyes are the same color as mine
Nobody knows if I see it

When he says, "brother, look at the shape I'm in. You gotta help me out"
When he says, "there's still time left to make amends.
You're in my trust, you're in my blood, I just need a friend"

And!

I need fifty bucks to pay off some old debts (You can spare it)
Or cover for me while I sort out some shit (Just this one time)

He lies when he opens his mouth
The truth never comes out
But I, believe it all

When my brother says,
"oh have you seen the shape I'm in? It's all because of you"
When he says, "don't even try to make amends
You're in my thoughts, you're in my blood, even in my dreams"

Sleeps through the night
Everything is alright
And his teeth are all white
And his face fits the type
Everything he says is true
His girlfriend, she loves him too
But his head starts to hurt
And his tie isn't straight
Goes to work early
But gets home so late
Lies down in his room
Go to bed, she'll be home soon
Wakes with a start
And she isn't in bed
So he flies down the stairs
Past the guy from that band
Is he wearing her perfume?
All because of you

When the mirror says, "just look at the shape that you're in
I offer you no forgiveness, not even in dreams
And the mirror says, "it's far too late to make amends, you got nowhere left to run"

Then the mirror breaks

I know which side you're on
I know which side you're on
I know which side you're on

I know which side you're on [x3]
Sleeps through the night(Everything is alright)
His teeth are all white(And his face fits the type)
Everything! (Everything)
Everything! (Everything)
You say is true
Nothings real!

Am I?!
Am I?!

Am I?!
On the same side?!

Overall Meaning

The song "Ladies and Gentlemen: My Brother the Failure" by Thursday is a poignant and emotional exploration of the relationship between two brothers, one of whom is struggling with addiction and facing the consequences of his actions. The song paints a vivid picture of the downward spiral of addiction and the destructive impact it can have on relationships, as well as the complex web of guilt, resentment, and love that can bind family members together.

The opening lines of the song describe the brother's desperate situation, passed out on the side of the road or in a stranger's room, while his family worries and waits for him to come home. The singer, presumably the brother's sibling, feels torn between the desire to help and the frustration with his brother's choices. The chorus, "This is my blood," emphasizes the idea that despite their differences and conflicts, the two brothers are deeply connected by their shared experiences and family ties.

Later in the song, the brother asks for money and support, but the singer struggles to trust him and doubts his sincerity. However, in the end, the singer realizes that he still loves his brother and wants to help him, even as he despairs at the damage he has caused. The final lines of the song are a plea for understanding and empathy, questioning whether the singer and his brother are truly on the same side and whether there is any hope for forgiveness and redemption.

Overall, "Ladies and Gentlemen: My Brother the Failure" is a powerful and haunting depiction of addiction and its impact on family relationships. Through its vivid imagery and raw emotional honesty, the song captures the pain and complexity of this difficult issue, and offers a poignant reminder of the importance of love and compassion in the face of addiction.

@eddy67

Great tune - I haven't heard it in years. The song takes on a much more powerful meaning after reading Someone Who Isn't Me

This song is a masterpiece because everything about it fits both Thursday and the genre. If you actually pay attention to Geoff's vocals closely, in a variety of songs, you'll find he's actually quite a talented singer. Personally, being a long time Thursday fan, his voice is a breath of fresh air compared to the same old melodies you hear today

@AJbassist

geoff is no way a "good"  singer , but he is the perfect singer for this bands , just like the used,  dead kennedy's  its more about the tones and message then being on key and perfect leave that to pop singers

@backintownproductions3121

I beg to differ sir. Geoff has expressed his vocal expertise on many songs that I would be happy to point you to. Admittedly his voice is one that takes some getting used to if you are a newcomer to Thursday. However, once you get a feel for his range/style, he is in a league of his own.
