It was all over the news and I believe, she had just heard the news in a cab on her way to the studio.
I remember this so vividly because she was a little late and this was very uncommon for her, she would always arrive about 45 minutes early to warm up and get prepared, (to this day, I can't recall any artist ever doing that) always ready to sing, professional to a fault, with no complaints ever)
She came in apologized for being late, and just started crying, we had soon found out what had happened. We, (my Engineer's at the time, Jonnie Most, Tom Fritze), and her aunt Julie tried to console her and thought it would be best if we reschedule the session for a later date, but she immediately said no, and to give her a few minutes to get herself ready.
We asked Julie, to please try and convince T to reschedule, but she said... if she, T, said she would need a few minutes, then just be patient and she would be right out. Low and behold, a few minutes later she comes in to the studio, listened to the track once so she could visualize it, (she had already known the song) and then went into the studio.
She started to sing the song, mulling around for a minute while we got her levels, and about half way through the song she said ok, which meant she was ready... and just like that, she sang the song in it's entirety, down in one take. We rewound the machine, played it back, and after...there was just silence, dead silence...the only thing that any of us could hear was the humming from all of the equipment, and that was almost completely inaudible.
We listened to the song, and not one of us said a thing afterwords for about a good minute or two, then T, asked to let her get another take, and we all said you're done and we would get back to it the next day. We were simply blown out the window!!!!
Now, just for the record, I know that if we asked for more takes, she would have stayed until the next day and fixed this, fix that, but the emotion that she had just filled that room with was, magical and at the same time as sad as anything I had ever witnessed since.
...it is so true of the healing power of music, and forever I will always cherish that moment.
