Young Volcanoes
Tiffany Alvord Lyrics

Jump to: Overall Meaning ↴  Line by Line Meaning ↴

When Rome's in ruins
We are the lions
Free of the coliseums.

In poison places,
We are anti-venom,
We're the beginning of the end
Tonight the foxes hunt the hounds,
And it's all over now before it has begun,
We've already won.

We are wild, we are like young volcanoes
We are wild, Americana, exotica
Do you wanna feel a little beautiful baby? Yeah!
Oh!

Make it easy, say I never mattered
Run it up the flagpole
We will teach you how to make boys next door
Out of assholes
(Ha Ha)

Tonight the foxes hunt the hounds,
And it's all over now before it has begun,
We've already won.

We are wild, we are like young volcanoes
We are wild, Americana, exotica
Do you wanna feel a little beautiful baby? Yeah!
Oh!

We are wild, we are like young volcanoes
We are wild, Americana, exotica

Do you wanna feel a little beautiful baby? Yeah! Yeah!
Oh!

Overall Meaning

The lyrics to Tiffany Alvord's "Young Volcanoes" describe a group of people who are rebellious and unafraid of change or destruction. The lines "When Rome's in ruins, we are the lions, free of the coliseums" suggest a sense of detachment from mainstream society and a desire to overthrow conventional power structures. This detachment is further emphasized by the line "In poison places, we are anti-venom" which represents a resistance to negative influences.

The chorus of the song, "We are wild, we are like young volcanoes," compares the group of people to volcanoes which are just starting to erupt. This can be interpreted as a reference to the group's potential for powerful change and transformation. The repeated use of the phrases "Americana, exotica" and "do you wanna feel a little beautiful baby?" suggest a sense of glamor and desire for a life outside the mundane.

The bridge of the song, "Make it easy, say I never mattered, run it up the flagpole, we will teach you how to make boys next door out of assholes," can be interpreted as a declaration of the group's power and ability to change the world around them. This can be seen as an empowering message that encourages listeners to embrace their unique talents and abilities and use them to create positive change.

I don't know why there is so many haters...

First of all, I don't see why she 'ruined' the song. I'm not going to say hers is better because they are both so different and so amazing.

Believe it or not she is not Patrick, she is a young lady and has a softer voice.

I understand it's originally a rock song but I love the way she manipulated it and made it her own to suit her and her voice.

I personally think she covered it beautifully and she is gorgeous.

Thanks Tiffany; it was wonderful 😊

Wasn't sure how you singing a fall out boy song would go but it's so beautiful! Your voice and the piano work so well!

Tiffany Alvord

Listen. I know it doesn't sound like the original song and this isnt punk but there is something called 'making the song your own'. Tiffany doesnt tend to copy songs directly when she covers them. She sometimes changes the style, mood, tempo and instruments. Leave her alone. Its hard to 'make the song your own' by adding your own twist instead of just copying.

I think the issue some people - myself included - are taking with the performance is the fact that she's singing in a style and mood that is wildly different from the lyrics themselves. It's very downbeat and contemplative, pensive, even verging on melancholic. But Young Volcanoes is not a song for contemplation, it's a song about youth, freedom, and, in a word, 'partying'. It's like singing a love song to the tune of a military march. I don't think many people at all are doubting her talent - she's got a lovely voice with plenty of potential, and her piano playing is certainly not too shabby - I think it's mostly the way she applied that talent. As for making it her own, I can think of some covers/arrangements/variations I know of that maintain the spirit of the song while still being unique and original, personally. I'm not saying she's committed some kind of crime against art or anything, I'm just saying she may not have made the best choices or wisest moves, that's all.

+Nash Bonnema A love song to a military march would be friggin' awesome! It just adds another layer of complexity and changes your perspective of the song. I mean, sometimes it won't work, but that doesn't mean you can't ever take a theme from one genre and mix it with another. For me, anyway :P

As I am complete trash for FOB, I usually don't think anyone covers their music very well but this is beautifully done!!

Alright. Can we all just stop bickering about this? Both versions of this song are absolutely amazing! The singers both conveyed it in their own style, their own way, and bent the meaning a little bit. Neither version is better or worse because someone sang it a certain way. They're both astounding!

Hannah Bradfield

Exactly!!! Patrick stump is a ledgers and I'm not saying she's better then him but she just changed it to fit her style! It's not bad it's beautiful.

Alright, this cover is wonderful, just like the original version is. As a fan of both Tiffany and Fall Out Boy, I have to say they you can't really compare them. Yes, it's the same song, but Tiffany's voice is obviously never going to sound like Patrick's. That really can't be helped. Tiffany is not Patrick, nor does she have the same voice as him. Both versions, this and the original, are wonderful, great songs. Just leave it at that and stop the hate.

They are different sides of the intensity spectrum with different feels to them ... the only consistence is the words
