Opening
Tim & Lee Wright Lyrics

Jump to: Overall Meaning ↴  Line by Line Meaning ↴

Come on, Gabey, hurry up!

Twenty-four hours!

Hey, why don't ya look where you're goin'.
You'd think it was your first time in New York!

It is!

New York, New York!
It's a helluva town!

We've got one day here and not another minute
To see the famous sights!

We'll find the romance and danger waiting in it
Beneath the Broadway lights;
But we've hair on our chests
So what we like the best are the nights
Sights! Lights! Nights!

New York, New York, a helluva town.
The Bronx is up, but the Battery's down.
The people ride in a hole in the groun'.
New York, New York, it's a helluva town!

Hey, Gabey! Gabey, look.

Gabey, it says here "There are 20,000 streets in New York,
Not counting MacDougal Alley the heart of Green-Witch Village,
A charming thoroughfare filled with"

Here we go again!

The famous places to visit are so many,
Or so the guidebooks say.
I promised Daddy I wouldn't miss on any.
And we have just one day.
Got to see the whole town
From Yonkers on down to the Bay.

In just one day!

New York, New York, a visitor's place,
Where no one lives on account of the pace,
But seven millions are screaming for space.
New York, New York, it's a visitor's place!

Hey! Look who's comin' back! It's Tom and Andy!

Hey, Tom, Andy! Hey, fellas, how are the New York dames?

Wonderful, I don't remember a thing!

Awful! I remember everything!

Manhattan women are dressed in silk and satin,
Or so the fellas say;
There's just one thing that's important in Manhattan,
When you have just one day;
Gotta pick up a date

Maybe seven

Or eight
On your way.

In just one day!

New York, New York, a helluva town.
The Bronx is up, but the Battery's down.

The people ride in a hole in the groun'.
New York, New York, it's a helluva town!!

Overall Meaning

The lyrics to Tim & Lee Wright's "Opening" describe the excitement and adventure of exploring New York City. The opening dialogue between two characters, Gabey and his friend, sets the scene for the song. They have only one day to see the sights of the city, and they intend to make the most of it. The lyrics mention some famous landmarks such as Broadway and Yonkers, but they also convey a sense of the energy and spirit of the city. The singer suggests that the city is both romantic and dangerous, with plenty of excitement and opportunity waiting under the Broadway lights.

The song continues by describing the many attractions of New York, from the 20,000 streets to MacDougal Alley, the heart of Greenwich Village. The singer promises his father he won't miss any sights, and he's determined to see the whole town in just one day. The lyrics mention the pace of life in the city, with "seven millions screaming for space," but also convey the excitement of the bustling metropolis. The tone of the song is playful and upbeat, with a sense that anything is possible in this vibrant city.

The final verse describes the reputation of New York women, dressed in silk and satin, and the singer suggests he intends to "pick up a date, maybe seven or eight" during his day in the city. The song ends with a repetition of the chorus, reinforcing the idea that New York is a "helluva town" full of sights, lights, and nights.
