Right now, that is more of a colloquialism than anything else, because we actually did not have mobile phones in 1975, when this song was written. But let us not get sidetracked. The line is significant because it sets up the scenario of the song: the singer has arrived at a mysterious mansion and there is a sense of urgency. It is quickly revealed that the singer is not what they seem and their appearance causes confusion and anxiety. The faithful handyman (played by the late Jonathan Adams) is introduced as a comic foil designed to make the audience feel at ease. The song then takes a sexual turn as the singer (played with sinister coolness by Tim Curry) declares themselves a "sweet transvestite" and claims to be a great lover under the cover of darkness. The chorus is repeated several times, driving home the point that this song is a celebration of sexuality, style, and all the things that make us different.
