I think that was more by design than Tim Curry choosing to do his own make up. This was a total B-Grade Indie Movie, the budget on this film was tiny, they probably were looking to slash costs anywhere they could and if the actors could do their own make up then that saved on make up artist costs. Tim Curry was familiar with the role having originated it on the West End so was probably comfortable doing his own make up, but I don't think that was necessarily a choice for him.

Though I’m sure he could have, he actually didn’t. He designed the makeup for the stage show, but Pierre La Roche designed and did this (Tim describes it as much more high fashion than what he used to do, and the dood is the guy who designed David Bowie’s look at the height of his high fashion era, too).

Tim Curry is quite possibly the most underrated actor of all time. He can do it all. One of my favorite performances of his is Dr. Poole in the movie Oscar. My kids grew up on him too, and we quote his lines from that movie. A global treasure, Tim is, and if nobody in the upper echelon of entertainment will acknowledge his perfect talent, I will keep singing praise about him.

I discovered this movie at a very “adventurous” and “formative” time in my life. Needless to say if I never found this movie I’d probably be some stuffy sexually repressed dude with a white picket fence, a wife who drinks wine a little too early and a little too much, two bratty kids, and a whiny hellspawn chihuahua named Mr. Tinkles. Thank Godzilla that I found this and felt motivated to embrace who I am, a weirdo who’s obsessed with kaiju movies, loves to flirt with both sexes (among other things), and loves to try weird and exciting culinary dishes from around the world. Think for a few minutes about the movies that Tim Curry has been in. The talent this man has is amazing. Seeing him since his stroke recovery, such as it is, is a testament to his work ethic and his ability to find humor in any situation.
Watch some of his performances again and appreciate the range of a truly great actor and amazing human being. The number of voice-acting movies is astounding, from Scooby Doo, Valiant, and Beauty and the Beast to Fern Gully (and so many more).
Just a few movies I've enjoyed performances beyond Rocky Horror - The Three Musketeers, McHale's Navy, Congo, Clue, The Shadow, Legend, Charlie's Angels, Scary Movie, The Hunt for Red October, Home Alone, and of course, IT.
Did you know he was in the TV shows Monk, Tales from the Crypt, and Roseanne (to name a few)?
Make some time to appreciate his greatness!

The film was broadly the same as the stage version anyway. So it was hardly "mind boggling" (her description) that he could perform it so well!

I can’t think of another example of an actor who had this much effortless charisma in a role. Once in a lifetime performance. Every other actor paled in comparison playing Frank because there was something Tim had that I can’t even put my finger on. So glad this was documented forever because it’s one of the best performances in a film ever

If you wrote a book about CONFIDENCE and BODY LANGUAGE...you would have to start with Tim Curry's opening scene here. I wonder if even he knows that what makes his performance so mesmerizing is his sheer confidence in the way he walks, talks, smiles and sings. With his head held high, his grand gestures are casual albeit flamboyant and he never fails to make eye contact with anyone. You can argue that this is just a movie...and a set...with a director and so, why shouldn't he be confident? The answer is simple: YOU EITHER HAVE IT OR YOU DON'T. Tim Curry isn't just a hero to gays, transgender people and the awkward teenager who suffers being "different", he's a hero to all of us. Folks, as funny as this might sound, this is what confidence actually LOOKS LIKE!
