Not Today
Tim Easton Lyrics
Jump to: Overall Meaning ↴ Line by Line Meaning ↴
You are the most alive
Then I woke up one day and just walked away
You got everyone's attention
But nobody's heart
I might come back again, but not today
I saw your movie screen
I touched your golden peaches and I walked away
I drank your sweet champaigne
I took your meek cocaine
I might do it again, but not today
I might do it again, but not today
I'm gonna step against my fear
Lean into the only love thats real
I mighta lose it again, but not today
She loved me just enough to remain confused
But not too much to just walk away
She loved me anytime
I was a mess at times
She mighta love me again, but not today
She mighta love me again, but not today
She mighta love me again, but not today
The lyrics of Tim Easton's song "Not Today" explore the emotions of a person who experienced a relationship that is complicated and fragile. The opening lines, "I looked you in the eye, You are the most alive, Then I woke up one day and just walked away," describe how the singer once saw the other person as vibrant and full of life, but ultimately decided to leave the relationship for reasons that are unclear. The lyrics convey a sense of distance and detachment, suggesting that the singer is struggling to reconcile their own feelings with the complexities of the relationship.
The second verse continues this theme of detachment, with the singer describing how they've experienced various indulgences with this person, but still don't feel fully connected to them. Lines like "You got everyone's attention, But nobody's heart," suggest that the other person is accustomed to being in the spotlight, but may not be able to truly connect with others. The chorus, with its repeated refrain of "not today," reinforces the sense of distance and emotional walls that the singer is putting up.
