Hey Joe, where you goin' with that gun of your hand
Hey Joe, I said where you goin' with that gun in your hand, oh
I'm goin' down to shoot my old lady
You know I caught her messin' 'round with another man
Yeah, I'm goin' down to shoot my old lady
You know I caught her messin' 'round with another man
Huh! and that ain't cool
Huh hey hoe, I heard you shot your mama down
You shot her down now
Hey Joe, I heard you shot your lady down
You shot her down in the ground yeah!
Yeah!

Yes, I did, I shot her
You know I caught her messin' round messin' round town
Huh, yes I did I shot her
You know I caught my old lady messin' 'round town
And I gave her the gun
And I shot her

Alright
Shoot her one more time again baby!
Yeah!
Oh dig it
Oh alright

Hey Joe,
Where you gonna run to now where you gonna go
Hey Joe, I said
Where you gonna run to now where you gonna go
I'm goin' way down south
Way down to Mexico way

Alright
I'm goin' way down south
Way down where I can be free
Ain't no one gonna find me
Ain't no hang-man gonna
He ain't gonna put a rope around me
You better believe it right now
I gotta go now

Hey, Joe
You better run on down

Goodbye everybody
Hey hey Joe

Overall Meaning

Tim Rose's song Hey Joe depicts a man, Joe, who is going to shoot his girlfriend for cheating on him with another man. The lyrics begin with Joe being questioned about the gun he is holding, and he straightforwardly replies that he is going to shoot his old lady because he caught her in the act of infidelity. He then confirms shooting her, and when the listener expresses shock, he reveals that he also shot his mother because she questioned him about the incident. The song's lyrics end with Joe revealing that he is fleeing to Mexico to escape punishment, and he encourages listeners to say goodbye to him.

The lyrics of Hey Joe reflect a plot that disturbingly glamorizes domestic violence and glorifies cold-blooded murder. Despite its dark nature, the song became widely popular around the world in the late 1960s, and it has been covered by several musicians, including Jimi Hendrix. Although the song presents an image of reckless violence, some music enthusiasts suggest that the lyrics may reflect the deep emotional pain of a man responding to betrayal and rejection, suggesting that the focus of the song should not only be on the act of violence itself, but also on the reasons that may have led Joe to take such drastic steps.

The drummer on Hey Joe and nearly all of Rose's first album, "Tim Rose," is world renowned Bernard "Pretty" Purdie. I talked to him at a drummer's session about 15 years ago, brought this album I bought in '66 or '67 for an autograph. Without any prompting, he signed "The best recording I ever did." Listen to the drumming breaks between stanzas. Not one is repetitive.
