Grace
Tim and Jeff Buckley Lyrics

Jump to: Overall Meaning ↴  Line by Line Meaning ↴

There's the moon asking to stay
Long enough for the clouds to fly me away
Well it's my time coming, I'm not afraid
Afraid to die

My fading voice sings of love
But she cries to the clicking of time
Oh, time

Wait in the fire, wait in the fire
Wait in the fire, wait in the fire
Fire

And she weeps on my arm
Walking to the bright lights in sorrow
Oh, drink a bit of wine, we both might go tomorrow
Oh, my love

And the rain is falling
And I believe my time has come
It reminds me of the pain I might leave
Leave behind

Wait in the fire, wait in the fire
Wait in the fire, wait in the fire
Fire

(It reminds me of the pain) I might leave
Leave behind

And I feel them drown my name
So easy to know and forget with this kiss
I'm not afraid to go
But it goes so slow, ooh-oh

Wait in the fire, wait in the fire
Oh-oh-oh!
(Wait in the fire, wait in the fire) yeah, yeah, ooh

(Wait in the fire, wait in the fire)
(Wait in the fire, wait in the fire)

Overall Meaning

The song "Grace" by Tim and Jeff Buckley has a hauntingly beautiful quality about it, with lyrics that delve deep into the themes of life, death, love, and loss. The opening lines of "There's the moon asking to stay/ Long enough for the clouds to fly me away" paint a surreal image where the singer seems to be yearning for an escape from reality. However, as the song progresses, we get the sense that the singer is getting ready to face his own mortality with courage and dignity.

The melancholic tone of the song is beautifully contrasted with the soaring vocals of Buckley, as he sings "Wait in the fire, wait in the fire/ And she weeps on my arm/ Walking to the bright lights in sorrow/ Oh, drink a bit of wine, we both might go tomorrow". The imagery conjured up by these lyrics is vivid and evocative, with Buckley seemingly trying to find solace in the arms of his love, as they face the inevitability of death together.

Ultimately, the song "Grace" is a testament to the beauty and fragility of life, and the courage that one must summon in the face of death. The lyrics are complex and multi-layered, with Buckley's vocals adding an ethereal quality to the piece.

There's the moon asking to stay

Long enough for the clouds to fly me away

Oh, it's my time coming,

I'm not afraid

Afraid to die

My fading voice sings of love,

But she cries to the clicking of time.

Of time

Wait in the fire.

Wait in the fire.

Wait in the fire.

Wait in the fire.

The fire.

And she weeps on my arm

Walking to the bright lights in sorrow

Oh drink a bit of wine

We both might go tomorrow

Oh my love

And the rain is falling,

I believe my time has come

It reminds me of the pain

I might leave

Leave behind

Wait in the fire.

Wait in the fire.

Wait in the fire.

Wait in the fire.

The fire.

It reminds me of the pain

I might leave

Leave behind

And I feel them drown my name

So easy to know and forget with this kiss

I'm not afraid to go but it goes so slow

Wait in the fire.

Wait in the fire.

Wait in the fire.

Wait in the fire.

Wait in the fire.

Wait in the fire.

Wait in the fire.

Wait in the fire.
