In order to understand how Timelock came to be we have to go back in time. Between 1980 and 1984 two bands were busy making a name for themselves in The Hague. At the time they were not aware of each other’s existence. One of these was the symphonic rock band ‘Ywis’ with Rinus Hollenberg on guitar and Julian Driessen on keyboards. The other was called ‘Harvest’ and played melodic rock and had bass player Bert de Bruijne and lead singer Ruud Stoker. Whereas ‘Ywis’ was very much influenced by the Canadian band Saga and published an LP in 1983 simply titled ‘Ywis’, Harvest played songs in the tradition of bands like Wishbone Ash and concentrated mainly on live performances.
The time was ripe for ‘Timelock’. Ruud and Julian had found the desired musical style and combined this with the talents of Bert and Rinus. They still lacked a drummer though (this was going to be an ongoing issue for the band). By then it was 1991 and the foursome went into Rinus’ studio to record new songs with the use of a handy tool: the rhythm box. In 1992 ‘Louise Brooks’ appeared and the critics were unanimously positive. During that time Rinus performed live with the revived ‘Q 65’ and persuades drummer Rob Louwers to join Timelock for promoting the CD with live performances. This turns out so well that Rob stays on to record ‘The Dawn’ in 1994. This CD scored well with the critics too and even rates 8.3 in ‘Aardschok’ magazine. One track of this CD (‘Someday’) was regularly played at Radio 3. After a number of performances the record label of ‘Timelock’ (SI-Music) unexpectedly dissolved.

When you wake up
And can’t look away
When you make up
Today is the final chapter
Not a word can come between
The promise and the lie
The road is narrow and absurd
Wind is crawling under your skirt
Men at work have seen the sign
Since they know your name
But after all you’re always mine
There’s no way out for me
Can’t lay it on the line
Must tell the final word tonight
And now my vision feels so right
Taking the easy way out
In the eye of the storm
Eternal triangle
Is running through my mind
And when the time is right
It’s killing you inside
You’re waiting in the hall
And you’re ready to go
(Well I don’t know)
The man with the blade
Is standing in the rain
And when he strikes again
He never shows his face
Today is the final chapter
Not a word can come between
The promise and the lie
The lyrics in Timelock's Love Triangle seem to revolve around a complicated relationship between three people: the singer, his love interest, and a third person who is not clearly identified. The first stanza suggests that the man is feeling insecure about his position in this love triangle. He is drawn to the woman (you) when she wakes up and makes up, but he also cannot look away from her. It seems as though he is torn between his feelings for her and the knowledge that there is someone else in her life, someone who might threaten his own relationship with her.
The chorus, which repeats twice throughout the song, suggests that this is a final chapter for these three people. The man cannot lay it on the line, which implies that he has some difficult decision to make. He must tell the final word tonight, presumably to either the woman or the third person. Despite this, he feels that his vision is right, which suggests that he is confident in his choice, at least for the time being.
The second stanza adds some more details to the story. The road is narrow and absurd, which could represent how complicated and difficult the man's predicament is. Wind is crawling under your skirt, which is a somewhat sexual image that could imply that the third person in the triangle is a man. Men at work have seen the sign since they know your name, which may indicate that the woman is well-known or perhaps a public figure. But despite all this, the man says she's always his, and there's no way out for him.
