"Street Singer" has a very distinctive favor to it that hearkens back to a time of "Beatniks" coffee houses, studio flats and jazz musicians playing gigs in smokey clubs.....cool as ice and sharp as a stiletto blade. I have always loved that sound. It was very common in old black and white T.V. hard boiled detective shows. You've seen them, some cat going down to the docks at night to investigate a murder while the narrator says something like "I knew she would be there with him and a .45 slug with my name on it, waiting in the dark for me to show up"...the plots may have been lame but the music was always cool

What music could you hear in soft-boiled detective shows?

Bass players may have a hard time selecting among Brooks' 4 sessions (2 released posthumously): Doug Watkins, Sam Jones, Paul Chambers, Wilbur Ware. But any one of the four sessions can be mesmerizing and addictive. The first---"Minor Move"--has not only the peerless tandem of Watkins and Blakey but standards like "The Way You Look Tonight" and "Star Eyes," both revealing the tenor man's achingly beautiful, melancholic sound even in bright, major keys. He releases each of his phrases with a jarring note of pain, reminiscent of Lady Day and Pops himself. I first discovered "Street Singer" on a McClean date ("Jackie's Bag"). Apparently Blue Note thought it was the only track worth saving from a priceless session, which offers Brooks' sad-sweet signature sound on each of five tracks (three by Brooks). Unforgettable, haunting music.

The subtlety and beauty of the head at Bbmin-maj7 is soul-wrenching. Unbelievable that a human being could create such sheer beauty out of such a simplicity. Tina is indeed on the pedestal with the greats. His demise is tragic; the bitter taste it leaves behind is somehow uncannily befitting to his haunting music...
