On the Run
Tina Dickow Lyrics

Jump to: Overall Meaning ↴  Line by Line Meaning ↴

I wake in the morning with one thing on my mind
To get up on my feet and be on my way
The wide roads are calling and I’m running out of time
To make the most of this exciting day

Hey!

Everybody’s gotta end up somewhere
I’m just taking my time to get there
And it looks like freedom and it smells like fun
But it feels like being on the run

I wake in the morning with one thing in my head
The haunting sound of chords I’ve yet to play
It sounds like a warning that maybe I should stay in bed
Before these winding roads lead my astray

Hey!

Everybody’s gotta end up somewhere
I’m just taking my time to get there
And it looks like freedom and it smells like fun
But it feels like being on the run

Somewhere there’s a place for us, a place for us
Where?
There’s a place for us...

Everybody’s gotta end up somewhere
I’m just taking my time to get there

And it looks like freedom and it smells like fun
But it feels like being on the run

Overall Meaning

The song “On the Run” by Tina Dico is about the excitement and uncertainty of life. The first verse sets the stage for the day ahead, with the singer waking up with a sense of urgency to make the most of their time. The “wide roads” are calling, but there’s an underlying feeling of being rushed and not having enough time. The chorus highlights the contrast between the perceived freedom and fun of living life on your own terms, and the reality of feeling like you’re constantly on the run, hurrying from one thing to the next without a clear destination in mind. The second verse introduces a bit of doubt and hesitation, as the singer hears “the haunting sound of chords I’ve yet to play”. This could be interpreted as a metaphor for the unknown future – the melody of life that has yet to unfold, and the question of whether to stay put or take a chance and follow the winding roads that lay ahead. The bridge offers a glimmer of hope, with the idea that there’s “a place for us” somewhere out there – a destination or a sense of belonging that will eventually be reached.

Overall, “On the Run” captures the conflicting emotions of excitement and apprehension that come with living life to the fullest. The idea that “everybody’s gotta end up somewhere” is both reassuring and a bit daunting, as it emphasizes the importance of enjoying the journey while still striving towards some sort of destination. The song speaks to anyone who has ever felt a sense of restlessness or yearning for more, but also acknowledges the fear and uncertainty that often come with taking risks and stepping outside of your comfort zone.
