Between 2007 and 2011, Tinashe was a member of the girl group the Stunners. Following their disbandment, she released the positively-reviewed self-recorded mixtapes In Case We Die (2012) and Reverie (2012). Following their success, Tinashe signed with RCA Records and released her third mixtape, Black Water (2013). Her debut single, "2 On" (featuring Schoolboy Q; produced by Mustard), reached number one on the Rhythmic airplay chart, and peaked at number 24 on the Billboard Hot 100.[4] Her debut studio album, Aquarius (2014), was noted by music critics as one of the most "solid" debuts by a new female artist in years. The album garnered her nominations for Soul Train and BET Awards.[5] Her collaboration with Snakehips and Chance the Rapper, "All My Friends", won the Ivor Novello Award for Best Contemporary Song in 2016.[6] The same year, Tinashe appeared on Britney Spears' single "Slumber Party", which topped Billboard's Dance Club Songs chart. Tinashe's second studio album, Nightride (2016), reached number eight on the Top R&B/Hip-Hop Albums chart in the US. Joyride (2018), her third studio album, peaked at number 58 on the Billboard 200 chart and reached number six on the UK R&B Albums chart. After departing RCA, Tinashe independently released the albums Songs for You (2019), 333 (2021) and BB/Ang3l (2023).

No, no, no, mmh
I said, calling me, calling me, baby
And you've been blowing my phone up all night
Didn't even notice
Wish that I could call back one last time
Let me block ya, I gotta be focused
Can't keep holding on now
Thinkin' 'bout just one more night
And now I'm folding
You know it's hard on me
I don't wanna cry no more
Waiting all night for you to hold me
Can we just let this be?
You're making it hard to leave
Every time I try
I won't be lonely
Please just let me down slowly
My heart turns colder
Just can't wait to get over
Ooh, ohh-whoa
Ooh
I've been chilling and living life lately
Getting used to not hittin' up your line
But I've been so emotional
Looking for a rebound, one more vice
Taking shots 'til I can't even focus
And I know that I really should not drive
But I'm looking for your address
Wonder if you're home tonight
And now I'm folding
You know it's hard on me
I don't wanna cry no more
Waiting all night for you to hold me
Can we just let this be?
You're making it hard to leave
Every time I try
I won't be lonely
Please just let me down slowly
My heart turns colder
Just can't wait to get over
The lyrics of Tinashe's song "Let Me Down Slowly" convey the emotions and struggles of a person who is trying to move on from a past relationship. The opening lines set the tone, with a repetition of "yeah, yeah, yeah, yeah, yeah" and "no, no, no" signaling conflicting feelings and a sense of uncertainty.
The first verse reveals the singer's frustration with constant communication from their ex. They express a desire to cut ties and focus on their own growth and well-being. The line "Let me block ya, I gotta be focused" suggests that the singer needs to distance themselves from their ex in order to move forward. However, they also admit to contemplating the idea of one last night together, indicating the lingering temptation to hold onto the past.
In the chorus, the singer reflects on their emotional state. They express their vulnerability, pleading for the ex not to make their departure any harder. The line "You're making it hard to leave, Every time I try" shows the ex's influence on the singer's ability to let go. The desire to avoid loneliness is also expressed, along with the plea for the ex to let them down gently.
The second verse reveals the singer's attempts to adjust to life without their ex. They discuss their efforts to enjoy their newfound freedom and independence. However, the emotional impact of the breakup is evident, as they confess to feeling overwhelmed and searching for distractions. The line "Taking shots 'til I can't even focus" suggests the singer using vices to numb the pain. The lyrics also touch on the deeper longing for connection, pondering whether the ex is available and if they would find solace in their presence.
The chorus is repeated, emphasizing the singer's desire for a gradual and gentle breakup. They express a growing sense of detachment and emotionally distancing themselves to protect their heart. The line "Can't wait to get over" signifies the singer's eagerness to heal and move forward.
Overall, the lyrics of "Let Me Down Slowly" paint a picture of someone caught between their longing for the past and their need to move on. The song explores the emotional complexities of a breakup, including feelings of vulnerability, temptation, and the resilience required to let go.
