Between 2007 and 2011, Tinashe was a member of the girl group the Stunners. Following their disbandment, she released the positively-reviewed self-recorded mixtapes In Case We Die (2012) and Reverie (2012). Following their success, Tinashe signed with RCA Records and released her third mixtape, Black Water (2013). Her debut single, "2 On" (featuring Schoolboy Q; produced by Mustard), reached number one on the Rhythmic airplay chart, and peaked at number 24 on the Billboard Hot 100.[4] Her debut studio album, Aquarius (2014), was noted by music critics as one of the most "solid" debuts by a new female artist in years. The album garnered her nominations for Soul Train and BET Awards.[5] Her collaboration with Snakehips and Chance the Rapper, "All My Friends", won the Ivor Novello Award for Best Contemporary Song in 2016.[6] The same year, Tinashe appeared on Britney Spears' single "Slumber Party", which topped Billboard's Dance Club Songs chart. Tinashe's second studio album, Nightride (2016), reached number eight on the Top R&B/Hip-Hop Albums chart in the US. Joyride (2018), her third studio album, peaked at number 58 on the Billboard 200 chart and reached number six on the UK R&B Albums chart. After departing RCA, Tinashe independently released the albums Songs for You (2019), 333 (2021) and BB/Ang3l (2023).

That I can replace your body, oh
I made up my mind, oh
I ain't gonna chase nobody, oh
No, I never did that, no, I never did that
No, I never did that, no, I never will
Run back, baby, if you need that
And, ayy
One in a million, made up my mind
I ain't gonna chase nobody, yeah
Won't be missed when you're gone
I'm fine on my own
If there's something that's wrong
You should let me know
'Cause I won't stay for long
If you act brand new
I can change your tune (yeah)
If you change up, I'ma change up too (change up)
So fast I can switch my moves
Never catch me runnin' back to you
Yeah, if you act up, I'ma act up too (act up)
I do me while you do you
'Cause at the end of the day, you know we tried
Didn't take long to decide
That I can replace your body, oh
I made up my mind, oh
I ain't gonna chase nobody, oh
No, I never did that, no, I never did that
No, I never did that, no, I never will
Run back, baby, if you need that
But I won't guarantee that I want you still
And, ayy
One in a million, made up my mind
I ain't gonna chase nobody, yeah
Oh-oh-oh-oh-oh-oh (hey)
Hey (yeah, oh)
Oh-oh-oh-oh-oh-oh (hey)
Hey (oh-oh-oh)
Oh-oh-oh-oh-oh-oh (hey)
Hey (oh-oh-oh-oh)
I ain't gonna chase nobody
No, I never did that, no, I never did that
No, I never did that, no, I never will
Run back, baby, if you need that
But I won't guarantee that I want you still
And, ayy
One in a million, made up my mind
I ain't gonna chase nobody
Tinashe's song "The Chase" is about self-love, confidence, and standing up for oneself. The song talks about a person who has taken the decision to move on and not chase anyone who isn't willing to reciprocate their affection. The lyrics imply that the singer doesn't want to waste their time on someone who doesn't appreciate them and that they won't be held back by anyone who isn't willing to commit.
In the first verse, Tinashe sings "I made up my mind, oh, I ain't gonna chase nobody." This verse indicates that the singer has come to the realization that they don't need someone who doesn't value them. They know their worth and won't compromise their happiness by chasing after someone who isn't worth it. Throughout the song, Tinashe asserts that she won't waste her time waiting for anyone to come back to her, even if they decide to "run back". The chorus repeats the message that the singer won't waste their time chasing anyone as they've made up their mind to move on.
Overall, "The Chase" is a song about empowerment and valuing oneself. The lyrics speak to anyone who has ever felt taken for granted in a relationship and is finally ready to move on.

Didn't take long to decide
That I can replace your body, oh
I made up my mind, oh
I ain't gonna chase nobody, oh
Tinashe has already made her decision to move on from her past relationship and is not interested in chasing after anyone. She thinks she can find a replacement for her ex-partner because she has made up her mind.
No, I never did that, no, I never did that
No, I never did that, no, I never will
Run back, baby, if you need that
But I won't guarantee that I want you still
And, ayy
One in a million, made up my mind
I ain't gonna chase nobody, yeah
Tinashe states that she has never chased after someone and won't start doing so now. Even if her ex-partner returns and tries to rekindle their relationship, she can't guarantee that she will still want them. She is sure about her decision to not chase anyone.
Won't be missed when you're gone
I'm fine on my own
If there's something that's wrong
You should let me know
'Cause I won't stay for long
If you act brand new
I can change your tune (yeah)
Tinashe doesn't care if her ex-partner leaves because she can live without them. If there is a problem in their relationship, they should speak up about it. She won't stay around for too long if they start behaving differently. She can adapt to their new behavior and change their relationship's current status.
If you change up, I'ma change up too (change up)
So fast I can switch my moves
Never catch me runnin' back to you
Yeah, if you act up, I'ma act up too (act up)
I do me while you do you
'Cause at the end of the day, you know we tried
Tinashe won't ever run back to her ex-partner, even if they change their behavior. She won't be a pushover; if they start acting up, she will to. Everyone should focus on themselves and not the relationship because, in the end, it didn't work out between them.
Oh-oh-oh-oh-oh-oh (hey)
Hey (yeah, oh)
Oh-oh-oh-oh-oh-oh (hey)
Hey (oh-oh-oh)
Oh-oh-oh-oh-oh-oh (hey)
Hey (oh-oh-oh-oh)
I ain't gonna chase nobody
No, I never did that, no, I never did that
No, I never did that, no, I never will
Run back, baby, if you need that
But I won't guarantee that I want you still
And, ayy
One in a million, made up my mind
I ain't gonna chase nobody
This part seems to be a repeated chorus with a catchy tune, and Tinashe reiterates her stand, saying that she has never chased a lover and will not start now. Her ex can come back if they want, but she can't guarantee they will get back together, and she has made up her mind about this.
