Girl
Tiny Tim With Brave Combo Lyrics

Jump to: Overall Meaning ↴  Line by Line Meaning ↴

Is there anybody there? Anybody there?
Is there anybody going to listen to my story
All about a girl who came to stay
She's the kind of girl you want so much it makes you sorry
Still you don't regret a single day

Girl girl girl
Girl girl girl
When I think of all the times I tried so hard to leave her
She would turn to me and start to cry
And she promises the earth to me and I believe her
After all this time I don't know why.

Girl girl girl
Oh girl girl girl
She's the kinda girl that puts you down when friends are there
You feel a fool
When you say she's looking good she acts as if she's understood
Its cool
Girl girl girl

Was she told when she was young that pain would lead to pleasure
Did she understand it when they said
That a man must break his back to earn his day of leisure
Will she still believe it when he's dead?

Girl girl girl
Girl girl girl
Why don't you understand?
Why don't you understand woman, what I do for you?
How I'd break my back and sweat
Worthless little thing
Why am I wasting time on you?

Girl, girl can't ya hear me?
Oh where are ya,ya little devil?
Girl girl girl
Girl girl girl

Why didn't your mother bring you up right?

Overall Meaning

The lyrics of Tiny Tim With Brave Combo's song "Girl" tell the story of a man who is caught in an intense love-hate relationship with a girl who puts him down in front of his friends, promises him the world, and then acts as if she doesn't care about him. The opening lines of the song, "Is there anybody there? Anybody there? Is there anybody going to listen to my story?" suggest a deep longing for someone to hear the singer's suffering.

The lyrics then describe the intense attraction the man feels towards the girl, despite her mistreatment of him. He says, "She's the kind of girl you want so much it makes you sorry, still, you don't regret a single day." The repetition of the word "girl" throughout the song conveys the singer's obsessive preoccupation with this woman.

In the bridge, the singer questions whether the girl was taught that pain leads to pleasure, and whether she still believes this even after the man is dead. The bridge offers a hint at the potential backstory behind the girl's behavior, but ultimately the song remains a portrait of a toxic relationship that the singer cannot escape.

I just love that whole album with Brave Combo to pieces. The arrangements are uniformly superb and Tim was finally given the sympathetic production and musical support he deserved. To listen is to dispel any notion of 'novelty act' . He was a guy totally in love with the Great American Songbook and beyond. Gawd Bless.

This is amazingly good. Brave Combo rules Texas, Carl Finch is a musical god and Tiny sounds so sex perverty that I can't help but love it! It needs to get radio airplay.

Thank you for posting. I used to write him off as pop silliness, but hear and see more now that I look back. This album pushed me into the "wow, he was an artist" mind set and now all his older stuff shines for me.

Loved this record when it came out! Brave Combo are so great for doing this with him and for many other reasons as well. So glad that Mr. Tim felt free to be free no matter what the true creeps would try to imply. So cool that he passed the way he did, doing the thing he lived for! Thank you PizzaGod for this tasty slice of life! : )
