Que Sera
Tito Puente and His Orchestra Lyrics

Jump to: Overall Meaning ↴  Line by Line Meaning ↴

When I was just a little girl
I asked my mother, what will I be
Will I be pretty
Will I be rich
Here's what she said to me

Que será, será
Whatever will be, will be
The future's not ours to see
Que será, será
What will be, will be

When I grew up and fell in love
I asked my sweetheart, what lies ahead
Will we have rainbows
Day after day
Here's what my sweetheart said

Que será, será
Whatever will be, will be
The future's not ours to see
Que será, será
What will be, will be

Now I have children of my own
They ask their mother, what will I be
Will I be handsome
Will I be rich
I tell them tenderly

Que será, será
Whatever will be, will be
The future's not ours to see
Que será, será

What will be, will be
Que será, será

Overall Meaning

The song "Que Sera" is about the uncertainty of the future and the idea that it is not ours to see. The first verse tells the story of a little girl who asks her mother what she will be when she grows up. She wonders if she will be pretty or rich. Her mother's response is simply, "Que será, será" which means "whatever will be, will be."

The second verse shifts to the perspective of the grown-up girl who has fallen in love. She asks her sweetheart what lies ahead for them. Will their lives be full of sunshine and rainbows? Her sweetheart responds with the same phrase as the mother, "Que será, será." The message is that no one can predict the future and it's best to accept that whatever happens will happen.

The final verse goes full circle to a mother now answering her children's questions about what they will be when they grow up. She tells them that she loves them and that whatever they become, "Que será, será." The song is a comforting reminder that even though life can be unpredictable, everything will work out in the end.
