Rosario was born in Higuey, a province in the Dominican Republic. Since childhood, he and his brothers showed interest in music, even playing self-created instruments like bottle caps, plastic containers, and others. Soon they started singing and playing in the neighbourhood and started what would later be known as Los Hermanos Rosario with whom he enjoyed great success later.
In the late 80s, after 12 years with his brothers, Toño decided to abandon the group and started his own solo career. He debuted April 14, 1990 in the Roberto Clemente Coliseum of Puerto Rico. He went on to become one of the most popular merengue singers with some of his albums reaching platinum status.

Toño Rosario's song "Barbara" tells the story of a man who married a woman out of necessity rather than love. The first two lines of the song highlight the man's lack of experience with pain or suffering, indicating that he was living a relatively carefree life until he got married. The lyrics go on to explain that the man married his wife to avoid going to prison, but living with her was more difficult than serving time behind bars. The wife was not a good daughter or mother, and the man couldn't ask her for anything he needed.
The chorus ("And so she killed my feelings, and so she killed my heart") emphasizes the toll that the marriage took on the man emotionally. The second part of the chorus ("And she also took my hopes, my faith, my sorrow, and my joy") underscores the idea that the woman took everything from him. The third verse recounts a moment from their wedding, where the man cried while the woman laughed and enjoyed herself. He was trapped in an empty marriage with a person he didn't love, sacrificed for the sake of appeasing someone else's desire for marriage.
Overall, "Barbara" is a tragic and emotional story of a man suffering in an unhappy marriage. The lyrics vividly capture the pain and hopelessness that the man feels, which has resonated with many listeners.
