All I Want
Toad The Wet Sprocket Lyrics

Jump to: Overall Meaning ↴  Line by Line Meaning ↴

Nothing's so loud
As hearing when we lie
The truth is not kind
And you've said neither am I
But the air outside so soft
Is saying everything
Everything
All I want is to feel this way
To be this close, to feel the same
All I want is to feel this way
The evening speaks, hear it say

Nothing's so cold
As closing the heart when all we need
Is to free the soul
But we wouldn't be that brave I know
And the air outside so soft,
Confessing everything
Everything

All I want is to feel this way
To be this close to feel the same
All I want is to feel this way
The evening speaks, I feel it say

And it won't matter now
Whatever happens will be
Though the air speaks of all we'll never be
It won't trouble me

All I want is to feel this way
To be this close to feel the same
All I want is to feel this way
The evening speaks, I feel it say

And it feels so close
Let it take me in

Let it hold me so
I can feel it say

Overall Meaning

Toad The Wet Sprocket's song "All I Want" is about the desire to connect with someone on a deep and meaningful level, and the fear that comes with vulnerability. The opening lines, "Nothing's so loud as hearing when we lie, the truth is not kind and you've said neither am I," suggest that the singer and their partner have been dishonest with each other and that their relationship is not built on a foundation of trust. The following lines, "But the air outside so soft is saying everything, everything," indicate that even though the truth may be difficult, there is a sense of peace and clarity that comes with honesty.

The chorus, "All I want is to feel this way, to be this close, to feel the same, the evening speaks, hear it say," speaks to the singer's desire to connect with their partner on a deeper level, to feel truly understood and accepted. The line "The evening speaks, hear it say" suggests that there is a sense of longing and desire in the atmosphere around them, reflecting the emotions of the singer.

The second verse continues the theme of the first, touching on the idea that closing oneself off emotionally prevents true freedom of the soul. The line "And the air outside so soft, confessing everything, everything" suggests that there is a sense of release in being honest and vulnerable. The final verse brings the song to a close, emphasizing that no matter what happens, the desire for emotional connection will remain. The lines "And it feels so close, let it take me in, let it hold me so, I can feel it say" speak to the overwhelming desire to connect on an emotional level, even if it means taking a risk and opening oneself up to potential pain and disappointment.

Overall, "All I Want" is a powerful and emotionally charged song about the desire for emotional connection, the pain that often comes with vulnerability, and the strength it takes to open oneself up to the possibility of connection.

Summer 1992
Met my future husband
Young, driving around rural roads, long summer days into night, holding hands with a new love, wind blowing thru hair & just not caring how i look, more that i feel incredible at this moment.

It's been more than 30 years & yet this song transports me to a time in my life that i wish i was still living. This song represents my young adulthood, being with my love yet feeling more free than i ever have, feeling safe & secure, strong & so frickin' optomistic of life.
How was i to anticipate that just 4 years later, my love is murdered, my heart is shattered & I'm left to raise the offspring of our love.....alone.
He looks exactly like him. He just turned 30. I held my breath the year he turned 23, so afraid I'd lose him too.
Miss you everyday ❤
I thank God for this song & it's ability to take me back in time & feel safe again.
Whatever happens will be...

I want this era back! 🙁 The 90s were the last decade of the greatest, most original and creative music with the deepest lyrics. Sure, there are some good musicians today but nothing beats the 90s and 80s. The world wasn't as divided, people got along more. Yes, there was crime, etc. but there is much more hate and anger today than ever. Things were more affordable then too.

The divide is orchestrated by our controllers. They need it to implement their plan of getting rid of what they call; the useless eaters.

@ibethmartinez6882

Me too!!!

@crichard9291

There's still good music out there, you just need to know where to find it. Go online and listen to 90.5fm WBER cuz they play THE BEST old and new alternative music. 😎

@SunflowerChild82

The 90’s were the last innocent decade. Thankfully, I got to experience it. Kids of today, life is so much harder for y’all, so different, in a bad way. Try and stay innocent for as long as you can. Break away from your phones & social media, that’s the only way to do it. Talk in person, face to face, hang out. Don’t let this crazy, shitty world get you down! 💛

@gatorhunter1

The older I get, the more I appreciate this music. They don't make music like this anymore.

@teutahyseni155

💯

@Max-zg2ci

Every generation has said that with each passing decade lol. The same music we got tired of hearing on the radio every time we switched it over are now the songs we wax nostalgic about in our later years. Guarantee you our folks don’t feel the same way about this music too. I’m not going to suddenly like Drake or Taylor Swift because I got older but my kids will look back in 15 years and tell me “they just don’t make music like they used to anymore” while Anti Hero plays on the oldies station

@dredgewalker

@@Max-zg2ci Wrong, the past generations of music were great and the artists were very creative and much more diverse than what it is today. Seeing kpop and and rap dominate this generation while being pieces of crap shows how much music has degenerated. The music pretty much represents the current state of things even the current generation of kids are crap and I don't need to guess you're part of this generation .
