The band formed in 1989. Toadies officially disbanded in 2001, although they had farewell concerts in 2002. The band reformed for a reunion show on March 11, 2006, headlining the Greenville Ave St. Patrick's Day parade concert.
Toadies toured extensively throughout the 1990s, opening for such artists as Red Hot Chili Peppers, White Zombie, Bush, and The Butthole Surfers. They also headlined and co-headlined tours with acts such as Brutal Juice, Baboon, Supersuckers, and The Reverend Horton Heat.
The primary reason for the breakup of the band was that Lisa Umbarger simply did not want to be a part of it anymore, and bandleader Todd Lewis felt that the band could not continue without her.
Since disbanding, members of the band have gone on to other projects. Todd Lewis is now in The Burden Brothers and Mark Reznicek is now in Eleven Hundred Springs.
Toadies reunited for 4 shows in Texas in March 2007. They played one show in Dallas, one in Houston, and two shows in Austin at Stubb's BBQ. All of the shows sold out shortly after they went onsale.
Toadies reunited for good in 2008, releasing their new album, "No Deliverance" on August 15th 2008.
In June 2010 it was announced that Feeler, the follow-up album to Rubberneck that was shelved by Interscope, would finally be seeing a release. Todd Lewis was quoted as saying: "Since there are unfinished versions floating around on the Internet, it is important to us that people hear it as we meant it to be." The album was released on July 20, 2010
Away
Toadies Lyrics

And I confess I shiver
You say hope
I say that's where I'm goin'
To be in the shade
The oldest trees above my head
When I'm away, I know in my heartThere is a heaven
If I'm out hunting
Come right on in, yeah
And even when I'm gone
My doors are always open
And if I'm asleep
Make sure my blanket covers me, yeah
When I'm away, I know in my heart
There is a heaven
When I'm away
To be in the shade
The oldest trees above my head
When I'm away, I know in my heart
There is a heaven
Come right on in, yeah
The lyrics of "Away" by Toadies touch on themes of companionship, security, and a search for a higher power. In the opening lines, the singer expresses a feeling of uncertainty or fear when confronted with the idea of "forever" - a concept often associated with a deep commitment to love or an unchanging afterlife. The following lines, however, reveal that the singer finds hope and comfort in the idea of a heaven that exists within their own heart.
The singer then shifts to a series of suggestions or requests for a hypothetical friend or visitor who might enter their space while they are "out hunting" or asleep. They emphasize a sense of openness and generosity - the idea that their doors are always open and their blanket can be shared. These lines could be read as an expression of the singer's desire for connection, even in moments of absence or vulnerability.
As the song concludes, the repeated refrain of "When I'm away, I know in my heart there is a heaven" reinforces the idea that the singer finds comfort and security in their own inner world. The image of being "in the shade" under "the oldest trees" suggests a connection to the natural world and a sense of continuity or tradition. Overall, the lyrics of "Away" convey a sense of searching for meaning and companionship in a world that can feel unpredictable or lonely.
