I was arrested for dumb teenage rebellion a lifetime ago. A scared kid, with no clue what to expect on the way to a jail in an unfamiliar state. This song was playing over the radio. And the officer obliged when I asked if he would turn it up. He BLASTED this song going through downtown Madison WI and I will always cherish that simple gesture in such a heavy moment of anxiety.

SUCH a beautiful story of human empathy & mercy. I was raised in a neighborhood where there was basically an unspoken understanding from the age of 15 on: when you roamed the streets at night, you were at WAR w/ the police, and in this particular war, it was US vs. THEM. And that there were NO EXCEPTIONS to that rule, at ANY time, under ANY circumstances. Period. They were THE ENEMY. And THEN, when I was 17, I was arrested for trying to steal a dvd & when both officers who responded to the store's call came to get me from the security office, one of the two saw the opportunity of my being handcuffed behind my back & defenseless to start swinging me around by them, throwing me into tables & chairs & slamming me against doorframes & THEN he even purposely knocked my head into a concrete wall, face-first, all while chuckling along to himself about it. HILARIOUS. When we got out to the parking lot, the other officer told him she would drive me to the lock-up & he could head straight back to the precinct & get started on the paperwork. She said something like, "now it's MY turn", or something equally terrifying. And then a few blocks away, she pulled over next to a vacant lot, got out, came around to the back of the patrol car on my side & opened my door & I thought "uh oh, here comes the nightstick"... and then she got me out, stood me up & apologized to me for what her partner had done. She told me they had both only just recently graduated from academy & the guy was just way too gung-ho about punishing criminals himself, before they even saw a judge. She even loosened up my cuffs a few ratchet clicks to allow blood flow back into my hands because he'd closed them too tight on purpose & my hands were going blue. I SWEAR to you she was CRYING..... THAT'S when I realized there were plenty of kind & decent people on BOTH sides, as well as both sides ALSO having dishonest criminals within their ranks. That day changed my life for the better. I hope, whoever that officer was & wherever she happens to be right now, that she is safe & well & has had a good life these past 23 years since. She deserves it.

Im 42. I sing this song at a slower pace, kind of hunting acapello tone, and I do so at random, usually while doing remedial tasks. I was front row center to see the Toadies and Bush at the CU Fieldhouse. Just had to fight through a mosh pit and hold on tight. They had to end their set early and bloody when some a**hat threw a drumstick back up on stage. Lost a fair bit of my hearing that night.

I feel it. This music has a way of dragging a person right back to some of the greatest moments they've experienced. I love it.
Thought in the lyrics. No autotune BS. No reliance on computers to produce the music of an entire song.

Just good, raw, rock that you can tell was rehearsed repeatedly in a gotdamn garage. Summers, billiards, pools, BBQs, long ass drives, recording your favorite songs on cassette tapes(after waiting hours for it to finally play), walkmans, hanging out with people you don't even speak to anymore but had the times of your life with...

I was working a temp job for event staff in ft worth back in the 00's and got tasked to take some supplies down to the panther island pavilion one morning. Although they're called "one hit wonders" this album was critically underrated. I remember getting so stoned at like 14 years old and listening to this album and being so hypnotized lol. Good times

Hmm I was in my late teens when these bad ass groups where around, this band is from my home state Texas and I do NOT remember them as one hit wonders.

Worked with Lisa Umbarger at Sound Warehouse record store back in 1987. She taught me how to sell tickets on the old style bulky white computers through Rainbow Ticketmaster. That's back when people would camp out in front of the store all night to get the best seats. The parking lot party was an event in itself. GOOD TIMES!!!!!!

Rock music was so melodic and fire in the 90's! As a Black teenage male back then, I easily could listen to most rock music while also listening to Wu-Tang, 8Ball & MJG, 2Pac, etc. Because the rock was so melodic and the bands seemed authentic and not corny and contrived like today's music.

Putting aside the understandably controversial lyrics and story of this song, there's no denying how incredible the music is. This is the epitome of everything that was new in rock music in the 90s. Call it alternative, call it whatever. I call it kickass. They don't make music like this anymore.

The video doesn't really line up with the lyrics though. The album, taken as a whole, is about a vampire. I always interpreted this song as the singer converting the girl he's singing to into another vampire, not that he was murdering and burying her. Maybe that's just me.

Umm where have you been, good music is still out there being made today, you just gotta look for it.

Secondly, I agree that it's a good song, but to call it the "epitome" of everything that was happening in 90s alternative music is a bit heavy handed. There were plenty of other bands around that time who would be a better fit for that title, such as: Nirvana , Pearl Jam , or Oasis , all of whom dwarfed a group like The Toadies by a huge margin when it came to their influence on the alternative genre. Nirvana especially was known for their experimentation with dark and controversial social commentary before the Toadies, and they did it to a much higher degree even.
If we are talking raw talent and sonic masterpieces , then that would undoubtedly go to a band like Tool who produced the greatest works of musical genius ever to grace the ears of man, record after record, during that decade.

lordlandis the whole album isn’t about a vampire, this song may or may not be but definitely not the whole album, Tyler is about a peeping Tom that was sort of an urban legend where they grew up
