Formed in the Rio Grande Valley, the original members included guitarists Danny McKenna, Balde Silva, Art Mendoza, bassist Steve Zipper and drummer Rob Young. After numerous club performances around South Texas, the band moved to San Antonio, Texas and received a major record deal from RCA (now BMG). This deal would recruit the production talents of Sean Delaney, who at the time was also producing KISS. In addition, guitarist Mendoza was replaced with guitarist and banjoist extraordinaire Ron Rose, who added a country flavor to the band.
Their self-titled debut LP appeared on RCA in 1978, with the single "My Angel Baby" topping the easy-listening charts and falling just shy of the pop Top Ten; 1979's More than a Love Song failed to recapture its predecessor's success, however, and after issuing If You Believe a year later, Toby Beau was dropped from their contract. The band continued playing the Texas club circuit during the decades that followed, however, still with Silva at the helm.
Then You Can Tell Me Goodbye
Toby Beau Lyrics

If it don't work out
Then you can tell me goodbye
Kiss me each morning
For a million years
Hold me each evening
By your side
For a million years
(CHORUS)
Then if it don't work out
Then if it don't work out
Then you can tell me goodbye
Sweeten my coffee
With a morning kiss
Soften my dreams
With your sigh
After you've loved me
For a million years
(CHORUS)
If you must go
No, I won't grieve
If you wait a lifetime
Before you leave
(CHORUS)
But if you must go
I won't tell you no
Just so that we can
Say that we tried
Tell me you love me
For a million years
(CHORUS)
Woah, oh, oh...
(CHORUS)
The lyrics of Toby Beauâs âThen You Can Tell Me Goodbyeâ express a love that is true and pure. The song speaks about being in love for a million years, holding each other for a million years and telling each other âI love youâ for a million years. The phrase âIf it don't work out, then you can tell me goodbyeâ speaks about the possibility of the relationship not working out in the future, but if it doesn't, the singer will accept it and not resist it. The chorus is reassuring that if the love fades, itâs okay for one to say goodbye, but until then, the love will be pure and strong.
The verses talk about the little things that lovers do to keep their love going. Sweetening coffee with a morning kiss and softening the dreams with sighs are some of the small details that make love endure. The singer is willing to let go when the time comes, saying that a lifetime should pass before parting ways. The song seeks to express the significance of love and the importance of cherishing it for however long it lasts.
