The first Noel the angels did say
The angels announced the birth of the holy child

Was to certain poor shepherds
The angels appeared to poor shepherds, signifying that the good news was for everyone, regardless of social status

In fields as they lay
The shepherds were lying in the fields, watching over their sheep

In fields where they lay
The shepherds were in a field with their sheep

Keeping their sheep
They were tending to their flock of sheep

On a cold winter's night
The night was cold, which added to the challenging life they lived

That was so deep
The night was dark, which added to the ominous feeling that was surrounding their lives

Born is the King of Israel!
The baby that was born is the King of Israel

They looked up and saw a star
The shepherds looked up and saw a star in the sky

Shining in the East beyond them far
The star was shining in the East, far away from the shepherds

And to the earth it gave great light
The star illuminated the earth with its bright light

And so it continued both day and night
The star shone both day and night, symbolizing the birth of a great person

Three wise men came from country far
Three wise men came from a distant land to find the new king

To seek for a King was their intent
They came to look for a king who they believed had been born

And to follow the star
They followed the star as it guided them to the new king

Wherever it went
They followed the star wherever it led them

This star drew nigh to the northwest
The star eventually led them to the northwest

Over Bethlehem it took its rest
The star stopped over Bethlehem, indicating that this was where the new king was born

And there it did both stop and stay
The star stopped and remained in place, over the house where Jesus was born

Right over the place where Jesus lay
The star was directly above where Jesus was lying

Then did they know assuredly
The wise men knew for certain

Within that house the King did lie:
The king was inside the house they approached

One entered in then for to see
One of the wise men entered the house to see the baby

And found the Babe in poverty:
The baby was found in unfortunate circumstances, highlighting the humble beginnings of the new king

Full reverently upon their knee
The wise men fell to their knees in deep respect and worship

And offered there in His presence
The wise men gave presents to the baby king while he was in their presence

Their gold, and myrrh and frankincense
The wise men offered gifts of gold, myrrh, and frankincense

Then let us all with one accord
Let us all come together in agreement

Sing praises to our heavenly Lord
Sing joyful songs in praise of our God in heaven

That hath made heaven
God is the creator of heaven

And earth of naught
God created the earth from nothing

And with His blood
God sacrificed His own blood

Mankind hath bought.
Through this selfless act, God purchased the souls of humanity
