The Love of God
Todd Agnew Lyrics

Jump to: Overall Meaning ↴  Line by Line Meaning ↴

The love of God is greater far
Than tongue or pen can ever tell
It goes beyond the highest star
And reaches to the lowest hell

Oh, the love of God, how rich and how pure
How measureless and strong
Oh, the love of God, it shall evermore endure
The saints' and angels' song

When years of time shall pass away
And earthly thrones and kingdoms fall
When men who here refuse to pray
On rocks and hills and mountains call

God's love so sure shall still endure
All measureless and strong
Redeeming grace to Adam's race
The saints' and angels' song

Oh, the love of God, how rich and how pure
How measureless and strong
Oh, the love of God, it shall evermore endure
The saints' and angels' song

Could we with ink the ocean fill
And were the skies of parchment made
Were every stalk on earth a quill
And every man a scribe by trade

To write the love of God above
Would drain the oceans dry
Nor could the scroll contain the whole
Though stretched from sky to sky

Oh, the love of God, how rich and how pure
How measureless and strong
Oh, the love of God, it shall evermore endure
The saints' and angels' song

Overall Meaning

Todd Agnew’s song, “The Love of God,” is an attempt to describe the indescribable love of God. Agnew draws from a rich history of hymns and gospel songs, many of which similarly attempt to capture the magnitude of God’s love. The song opens with the assertion that the love of God is greater than human language can possibly express. It is not limited by the boundaries of the natural world, as it extends beyond the highest star and reaches down to the depths of the lowest hell. The refrain emphasizes the strength and endurance of God’s love and tells of how it is celebrated by both saints and angels alike.

The second verse shifts to the future, where all of the earthly thrones and kingdoms will fall away. Even those who refuse to pray in life will turn to rocks and hills and mountains for refuge, but God’s love will persist. This verse speaks of redemption, as God’s love “redeems” Adam’s race. The final stanza presents an interesting thought experiment - if all of the oceans were replaced by ink and the skies were made of parchment and every person on earth became a scribe, it would still not be enough to express the depth of God’s love. The song closes with a repetition of the refrain, along with the affirmation that the love of God is indeed the “saints’ and angels’ song.”
