Something's Gotta Give
Todd Gordon Lyrics

Jump to: Overall Meaning ↴  Line by Line Meaning ↴

When an irresistible force such as you
Meets an old immovable object like me
You can bet just as sure as you live

Something's gotta give
Something's gotta give
Something's gotta give
When an irrepressible smile such as yours
Warms an old implacable heart such as mine
Don't say no because I insist

Somewhere, somehow
Someone's gotta be kissed

So, en garde, who knows what the fates might have in store
From their vast mysterious sky
I'll try hard ignorin' those lips that I adore
But how long can anyone try?

Fight, fight, fight, fight, fight it with all of our might
Chances are some heavenly star-spangled night
We'll find out just as sure as we live

Something's gotta give
Something's gotta give
Something's gotta give

Fight, fight, fight it with all of your might
Chances are that some heavenly star-spangled night
We'll find out just as sure as we live

Something's gotta give
Something's gotta give
Something's gotta give

Something's gotta give
Something's gotta give

Aw, let's tear it up

Overall Meaning

These lyrics describe a classic romantic dilemma – the attraction between two people who seem incompatible. The singer is an "old immovable object," while his love interest is an "irresistible force." They are seemingly opposites in every way, and yet they are drawn to each other.

The first verse sets the stage for this conflict, with the singer acknowledging that "something's gotta give" when two such opposing forces meet. The second verse introduces a specific scenario: the woman's smile warms the man's "old implacable heart," but he knows that she might resist his advances. He implores her not to say no, because he insists that "somewhere, somehow, someone's gotta be kissed."

The chorus repeats the refrain that "something's gotta give," but the final verse takes a somewhat more optimistic turn. The singer vows to fight with all his might, ignoring the temptation of the woman's "lips that I adore." He knows that the fates might have surprises in store, but he is determined to see it through. The lyrics end with a playful nod to tearing things up, perhaps indicating that the singer is feeling more confident in his chances.

What makes these lyrics especially interesting is the clever wordplay and the use of metaphor. The comparison of the man to an "old immovable object" and the woman to an "irresistible force" is a perfect analogy for this type of romantic conflict. The chorus phrase "something's gotta give" is also an example of wordplay, as it could refer to either the resolution of their conflict or a physical give (as in breaking or collapsing), creating an added layer of meaning.

Hi Matt - when you say "EW analysts with a good track record that are looking for a supercycle top" - if you think about that for a second it's highly contradictory. We're essentially at all-time highs so not sure how anyone would have a good track record while being bearish.

Anyway, though you have not heard of me, some background. I've worked side-by-side with the best in the world over the last 2 decades. Not bragging, just facts. I did a join venture with Prechter and Elliott Wave International for 2 years https://youtu.be/-_OBeq-VQI4?t=250 I had to end it b/c they were constantly bearish and I was not (impossible to carry on while you're managing money.) I've worked with the best investment bank Elliott Wave analysts in the world now that are now providing research to hedge funds. I traded for a hedge fund during the GFC using Elliott Wave. So, point is there are very few people in the world who are as experienced as I am. I don't make such bold claims lightly and feel super cheesy putting that in writing as I try to remain humble before the market gods, but it's simply the case. Maybe 10-20 people in the world have the experience I do with Elliott Wave. I love it and hate it at the same time. It'll forever be a part of me, but I hate defending it b/c of SO much misinformation (as you wrote above).

Here's where I differ from the Elliott Wave community that is piggybacking off Prechter's call. Dow to $100k+ https://www.youtube.com/live/-pTG0hDCXpY?feature=share&t=1403

You can search back in my YouTube channel to see what I've done, but here are a few videos

Nov '22 - corrective lows https://youtu.be/P1lH7iIHsmI?t=372
Nov '22 new uptrend https://youtu.be/gsKxPHRfYkI?t=78

To answer your question in my wealth management I was long but hedged in Q4 of '22. I held 12.5% cash, and 5% in inverse ETF PSQ in my growth model. In Feb of 2023 I took off the shorts, but held 16% cash. On May 11th I reduced cash down to 3%.

Anyway, My fault for not being "out there" enough marketing and tooting my horn, but I'm more of a trader and portfolio manager who concentrates on the markets rather than headlines. Thanks for the comments though - I do appreciate it.

Stop simping.

@rahulchahal3824

Completely agree with you Todd. I went bullish in November, had 2nd thoughts in March but just kept adding to longs in April. The market almost feels like it is designed to fool investors.

@ToddGordon

Ha - yes! Pretty much the same story here. Two old market sayings come to mind "The market is headed to where it's going with the least amount of investors on board" Sentiment is such a key indicator along with technicals and fundamentals when it comes to managing money. Thanks for watching and commenting.

@issenvan1050

“So if something happens, then they can cut rates.” Then what? Employers will re-employ the employees they fired yesterday, because the funds rate is 0.5% lower today, let us say?.. Or banks start to give loans in a recessionary environment with defaults? 😂

@issenvan1050

How about the money supply? Rates rates rates…

@ToddGordon

We talked a bunch of about rates. QT is happening as velocity of money has plummeted - disinflationary / deflationary, which further cements Fed on hold in Sept / Nov, yield curve steepens, growth stock uptrend resumes.
