Framed
Todd Snider Lyrics

Jump to: Overall Meaning ↴  Line by Line Meaning ↴

HANGING AROUND DOWN ON SOMETHING TO DO STREET
I'M LIKE THE FIRST DOLLAR BILL THAT THEY FRAME
WATCHING MEDIA COVERAGE OF MEDIA COVERAGE
OF SOME KID WHO CAN'T MAKE PEACE WITH FAME
IT MUST BE TOUGH, MAN
THE PAPARAZZI AND STUFF, MAN

OVER SERVING MY COUNTRY UNDER GENERAL MALAISE
HE SAID HE WASN'T MAKING PEACE UNTIL THEY PAID HIM A RAISE
HE SAID THAT KILLING WAS PAYING LIKE I DIDN'T KNOW HOW
IF PEACE PAID WE'D HAVE IT MADE BY NOW
WE'D HAVE IT NEW AND IMPROVED BY NOW
IF IT PAID ANY

I TOOK A BETTER JOB POURING FLUORIDE IN THE WATER
FOR THE SON OF THE BILDERBEG'S ONLY DAUGHTER
I SAID HOW DO YOU KNOW
SHE SAID YOU KNOW HOW YOU JUST
KNOW SOMETHING IN YOUR GUT
THAT YOU JUST GOTTA TRUST
WELL IT'S NOTHING LIKE THAT
WE ARE JUST RICH AS ALL FUCK IS ALL

SETTING THE LONDON BANK ASSOCIATION LIABLE RATE
FRAMED FOR CALLING OUT THE UNITED STATES
ALL TIME PRISON TIME WARTIME ECONOMY
NOW IT ALL SEEM SO FAR OFF OF THE WALL TO ME TO ME
I'M WATCHING EVERY DOLLAR MAKE CHANGE BUT ME
I'VE BEEN FRAMED
I'VE BEEN FRAMED

I'M LIKE THE FIRST DOLLAR BILL ON THE WALL
FRAMED

Overall Meaning

The song "Framed" by Todd Snider appears to be a commentary on fame, the military-industrial complex, the corrupting influence of money, and society's prioritization of wealth over morality. The first verse finds the singer observing the media hype surrounding a young celebrity who can't cope with the pressures of fame. The singer notes that he, too, feels trapped and limited in his life, like the first dollar bill that is framed and hung on the wall, unable to be used for anything else. The second verse shifts focus to the singer's time in the military, serving under "General Malaise." The general tells the singer that he's not interested in pursuing peace until he gets a raise, illustrating how war and violence are often motivated by financial gain rather than ideological or moral reasons. The singer then takes a job pouring fluoride for the wealthy Bilderberg family, who tell him that they are simply "rich as all [expletive]." The final verse mentions the LIBOR rate scandal in London, hinting at the widespread corruption and greed of the banking industry. The song ends with the refrain "I've been framed" repeated twice, perhaps suggesting that the singer feels trapped and wronged by the injustices of society.
